Heart Gallery has been open for five years!

This little post about our birthday celebrations is really late so I must apologise for that … it’s all to do with  the ‘time’ thing and how it can play tricks on you! I actually can’t believe it is five years since I first opened the amazing doors of Heart Gallery to you all; it really doesn’t seem that long! In the same respect I thought our party to celebrate five years in business was only last week…..it wasn’t!

Beautiful packages from Lisa Murdoch

Lots of thought and careful planning goes into an exhibition at Heart Gallery and the Birthday one was such a celebration of achievement it had to be right so the contents of these little packages from Lisa were just perfect. Lisa cut, snipped, stitched and styled the bunting then delivered it wrapped like a birthday present and I was over the moon with it.

The weather the week of our party wasn’t that great and the theme for FIVE AND FABULOUS was a Garden Party! However, we kept our spirits up with positive thoughts and were blessed with a dry afternoon and evening in the end so we were all happy bunnies….the Makepiece models for the fashion show were happy little sheep!

We celebrated with pink fizz, cake pops, frozen yogurt and the perfect music provided by two members of professional local string quartet Ariana.

We all had a jolly good time at Five And Fabulous Exhibition and after 5 hours on my feet it was time to call it a night and head off home.

Meet The Maker – Sabine Little

Sabine Little - Glass Artist and Jeweller

Sabine is a professional lampworker and glass bead maker living near Sheffield, on the edge of the Peak District.

As an artist she is interested in stories, and the words that we choose to tell these stories. Words hold power over almost everybody, evoking dreams, memories and aspirations. Sabine has a love for words – for the strength they can give, for the power inherent in them.

The Wordsmith range features lines and excerpts from some of the best-known authors in history. Love poems, inspirational words, playfulness, they are all accounted for reminding us of who or what we might be, or indeed, who and what we already are.

Whether a classy, simple design with words on a plain and/or etched background, or a more elaborate piece of jewellery with polka dots, vintage roses or curling vines, the words are always the centre of attention.

Sabine works with both soft and borosilicate glass, combining lampwork and cold working techniques to create a variety of jewellery and sculptural pieces and her work has been published and exhibited through a number of outlets both in the UK and abroad.

Meet The Maker – Emily Margaret Hill

Emily Margaret Hill - Jeweller

Emily’s work intends to encapsulate a semblance of sentimentality for the wearer, for example her lockets could contain the owner’s desired secret object. They are made from sterling silver with recycled 9ct gold safety chains and cast bone t-bar fastenings.

Emily can also personalise the outside of the locket by using a map of your own locality. The cylindrical lockets are etched with maps so you can pick a place that has a particular sentimental value which is a beautiful idea.

With her glass vessels Emily curates a microcosm of categorisation and observation, containing little creatures to inspect closer, as an amateur Victorian collector would do in a Wunderkammer or cabinet or curiosity.

Emily also casts and hand forms a selection of Victorian objects of ritual and remembrance. Creating such carbon copies lessens their sentimental value, but allows the objects to be appreciated purely for their delicacy and aesthetic.

Emily’s aim is to produce pieces of hand crafted, wearable jewellery that are unique. All her pieces are completely bespoke and she only uses recycled precious metals and found objects where possible to make the individual pieces as ethical and sustainable as possible – something I wish would be done more often.

If Emily was not making gorgeous jewellery for a living she says she would without a doubt working for a film company in costume or props…..perhaps with a sideline in taxidermy!

Emily was once asked which celebrity she would love to see wearing her designs to a big event and she felt that someone eccentric like Daphne Guinness or Helena Bonham Carter would really do her nostalgic jewellery justice. I sincerely hope one day this happens for Emily so will be keeping my eye closely on that red carpet in the future!
