Emma began working with anodised aluminium to allow herself the freedom of creating her own surface patterns, she finds it fascinating how printing techniques can look on the surface of the metal and the irregularities that occur.

The Constellation series represented a change in direction from her previously colour focused work. Emma followed a more conceptual path and explored the idea that the stars should be the brightest lights in the night sky, however they are being drowned out by light pollution from hundreds of street lights which sometimes, from a distance, seem to form man-made constellations on the night landscape.

Taking inspiration from images of these man-made “stars”, Emma hand prints patterns onto the aluminium, using a transfer print technique. Then, inspired by traditional representations of constellations and star systems, Emma press-forms the aluminium into gentle shapes, which are then used to create pieces that form constellations on and around the body.

Emma enjoys the transformation of “non precious” materials into something that can be treasured and Heart Gallery hopes that you treasure your piece for a long time.
