Rosie Scott-Massie – Artist

Rosie combines expressive use of paint with precise paper-cutting techniques to create abstracted landscapes and studies of unusual buildings.

The Doric Temple, Duncombe Park

Inspired by the history and stories within a place, and themes of escapism, Rosie works with maps, drawing the landscape from them with a scalpel, destroying the map’s primary purpose and celebrating it’s decorative qualities.

Rosie’s most recent work pushes the medium of papercutting by introducing the 3rd dimension, using pins to develop shadow and depth amongst the intricately cut paper.

Rosie’s new pieces for Heart Gallery are itching to get hung on our walls and you may even recognise the landmarks!

We can work closely with Rosie on commissions so if you have a favourite building, place or area you would like depicting as a framed papercut by Rosie then call in to discuss your requirements.

At GNCCF October 2011, Heart Gallery was asked to be a prize sponsor and proudly offered an exhibition opportunity to Suet Yi Ceramics which set the ball rolling to find makers that would compliment Suet’s work which is inspired by the beauty of wild flowers, falling leaves, autumn trees and resting birds.

Meet The Maker – Yasemin Wigglesworth

Yasemin Wigglesworth

Yasemin Wigglesworth – papercut artist

Yasemin is a papercut artist based in Gloucestershire and hand cuts all her own original designs from paper using a surgeon’s scalpel.  Each piece is complete, cut from a single sheet of paper. Nature, The Arts & Crafts Movement, Iznik ceramic designs and East Asian woodblock prints and tapestries are her main sources of inspiration.

Thumbelina

Thumbelina

Yasemin regularly exhibits work in a few galleries across the UK and has recently started to have some of her designs published as greeting cards. Heart Gallery has worked with Yasemin before but the fairytale theme for our current exhibition ‘May All Your Dreams Come True’ really excited Yasemin and the pieces she has created for us are stunning.

Meet The Maker – Jennifer Collier

Jennifer Collier - designer/maker

Jennifer Collier – designer/maker

Jennifer’s practice focuses on creating work from paper; by bonding, waxing, trapping and stitching she produces unusual paper ‘fabrics’, which are then used to explore the ‘remaking’ of household objects.

The papers are treated as if cloth, with the main technique employed being stitch; a contemporary twist on traditional textiles.

The papers themselves serve as both the inspiration and the media for her work, with the narrative of the books and papers suggesting the forms.

Jennifer tends to find items then investigate a way in which they can be reused and transformed; giving new life to things that would otherwise go unloved or be thrown away.

We love Jennifer’s work and hope that you will too when you bob in to take a peek.

Meet The Maker – Jane Strawbridge

Jane Strawbridge - artist

Jane Strawbridge – artist

Jane has worked as an artist for over twenty years, in a variety of materials. Her sculptures are always strongly influenced by her everyday life.

People and animals met on daily dog walks set the seed of an idea. The materials then come into play and direct each piece’s development. Jane uses found materials wherever possible, giving each figure a strong character. These materials give a sense of a history to the existence of each piece.

All surface colours and patterns are from papers and books giving an aged and subtle finish. The only paint being the tiny lips. Each resulting piece is unique.

Meet The Maker – Bronia Sawyer

May 13, 2012
Bronia Sawyer - paper artist

Bronia Sawyer – paper artist

Bronia’s creativity started early in her childhood, it has been part of who she is for as long as she can remember. Creativity and imagination go hand in hand and Bronia’s imagination has always been vivid; it has been throughout her life both a blessing and a curse. As a child it fed her nightly anxiety creating faces in the shadows and monsters under the bed but in the light it fed her daydreams, driving her to create worlds in which she felt safe. In this way art gave her control in a world she found confusing and helped her through into adulthood to explore emotions and understand new experiences.

Bear Hunt - Bronia Sawyer

Bear Hunt – Bronia Sawyer

Bronia’s dyslexia was picked up around age 7 or 8 and she worked hard on her reading and writing skills but her art was always a priority, her struggles with the written word drove her to express herself through art instead.

Under The Sea - Bronia Sawyer

Under The Sea – Bronia Sawyer

Art gives her life value; it makes her feel noticed and has become part of who she is. Bronia works a lot with text now. Over the years she has reconnected with words and realised the magic of reading and writing, they are just another way of expressing the imagination and knowledge.

Book Sculpture - Bronia Sawyer

Book Sculpture – Bronia Sawyer

Through her book sculptures she combines her old weaknesses with words with her artistic strength, and in doing so has found that instead of fearing reading and writing she has grown to love words. She sees that they are beautiful; they are powerful and can be used like colour in a painting to stir the imagination and communicate the magic inside everybody.

Growing Knowledge - Bronia Sawyer

Growing Knowledge – Bronia Sawyer

We all have a need to communicate and she enjoys combining as many tools as possible to do so. Bronia’s work is the after effect of an overactive mind and she hopes for it to be enjoyed on many levels. That may be visually or mentally, there are many reasons for it and many layers to be explored.

Selling well in Europe Heart Gallery is so proud to feature Bronia’s paper sculptures in Heart Gallery, Hebden Bridge, so call in soon to be inspired and intrigued.

Meet The Maker – Heather Dewick

February 29, 2012
Heather Dewick - bookbinder

Heather Dewick - bookbinder

I first met Heather at Saltaire Arts Trail in one of the Open Houses and could have bought half her stock! I didn’t, but I did manage to pick up some very appropriate Christmas presents – yes, in May!

Heather has always loved reading, and has always enjoyed making things, so making and repairing books makes her happy (but not rich!). Heather’s journals and notebooks can be made to measure for any purpose – travel, garden, recipes, etc with a customised cover, or lettered if required. She hand-sews the pages using paper in the 80-120 gsm weight range, which can then be either trimmed to the required size, or left untrimmed for a slightly more “handmade” look.

She finds inspiration for her work in many places – books old and new, typography, pattern, words, and the materials she uses – paper in particular.

From her studio in Sheffield Heather does a wide range of work, from restoration to making books for artists and has been making and mending for nearly 20 years. Her restoration work is true to original materials and techniques and her bespoke work is pure perfection. ‘Family Bibles’ are sent to Heather in often very poor condition, having been passed around the family or stored in damp cellars. They often contain important information about a family’s history and are worth saving – Heather has rescued many. Extra pages for family information can be added if required. However, largely due to their weight and “well used” condition, they can need quite a lot of work to make them useable and displayable again.

Although initially starting out as a book restorer Heather is now in demand for her handmade books. Heather hopes you share her preference for original and inspiring high quality materials, conventional or otherwise. Heart Gallery certainly does as she often uses unique hand decorated papers, she doesn’t mass produce and all her books are original and so well made. Heather’s sketchbooks are made-to-measure, using good quality cartridge/pastel/watercolour papers (or a mix). If you use a specific paper, let her know and she can usually obtain it. Heather uses a heavier weight of paper for sketchbooks (120 gsm upwards) and as with journals, cover or size etc can be your choice.

Because I fell in love with Heather’s work so much last year I booked her in for our Wedding Exhibition February 2012 and then had to count down the days until her amazing books would be on display in the Heart Gallery. Heather can now add bespoke wedding albums to her long list of many talents. Call in to see the pieces she has made for ‘I DO’ 2012 and chat to us about your special day, requirements, colour schemes and desires. You can really go to town on personalising you album. You can make it to your wedding colour scheme, or even use the same fabric as your dress. A popular request is for Heather to mount a a wedding photo (or artwork) on the cover, with the couples’ names etc underneath. Guest books may also be covered in a fabric of your choice to match. Heather can make you a bespoke Wedding Album and/or Wedding Guest book and we hope you can feel the love Heather has put into making it for you to cherish for many years to come.
