Rosie Scott-Massie - Artist

Rosie Scott-Massie – Artist

Rosie combines expressive use of paint with precise paper-cutting techniques to create abstracted landscapes and studies of unusual buildings.

The Doric Temple, Duncombe Park

Inspired by the history and stories within a place, and themes of escapism, Rosie works with maps, drawing the landscape from them with a scalpel, destroying the map’s primary purpose and celebrating it’s decorative qualities.

Rosie’s most recent work pushes the medium of papercutting by introducing the 3rd dimension, using pins to develop shadow and depth amongst the intricately cut paper.

Rosie’s new pieces for Heart Gallery are itching to get hung on our walls and you may even recognise the landmarks!

Molly Ginnelly - Jeweller

Molly Ginnelly – Jeweller

Molly is currently studying at HND level at Carnegie College Dunfermline and in the early stages of  her career as a jeweller so she is searching for her own unique style.

Large Mixed Media Pendant

Exploring new techniques, experimenting with both metals and mixed media materials and investigating different sources found in the natural environment her current work is vast and varied whilst concentrating on one particular theme.

Coloured Bracelet

Inspired by tree branches, leaf patterns and textures and places from her childhood, the variety of design, techniques and materials Molly has used in her collections show the diversity and range she is able to work in. Molly’s work includes techniques such as roll printing, inlay, patination and stone setting. This mixture of different techniques produces interesting patterns and finishes, giving individuality to each piece showing the diversity in which she likes to work.

Small Mixed Media Necklace

Searching for perfection, balance and form, Molly’s work continues to develop and grow. Recent additions to her collections are Formica laminate based jewellery, including a collaboration with paper artist Charlie Trimm. Charlie works by hand creating romantic and whimsical paper cuts; each piece unique and colourful, she works to her own designs and particularly likes birds, trees and flowing patterns.

When Molly met Charlie the story began …

birdie earrings

Birdie earrings

Meeting through a friend of a friend of a friend you might say, through social networking actually. Tweets led to facebook likes which then led to emails and loving each others work Molly and Charlie decided to have a look at what they could do together, Molly with her trusty but not rusty jeweller’s saw and rolling  mill and Charlie and her amazing magical scalpel.

Birdie Brooch

They set about new ideas and patterns with great excitement and wonder of the outcome. A few weeks later came designs for embossing silver and quickly after, a range of colourful brooches with Molly’s favourite material Formica…yes you read that last part right…lovely, colourful Formica. Cut by laser to achieve the beauty and intricacy of the branchy patterns and double layered to show depth and contrasting colour this range of wearable jewellery pieces have proven to be most popular and as beautiful as a little birdie itself.

Molly’s birdie range is currently in Heart Gallery and we all love it and really hope to receive some of these little beauties to add to the birdie collection now Autumn is nearing.

Charlotte Trimm - papercut artist

Charlotte Trimm – papercut artist

Charlotte has continued her methodical approach to creation, which was the foundation of her painting and installation work, to produce a collection of hand-drawn and hand-cut papercuts.

Dandelion clock

Dandelion clock

These works now come under ‘By Charlie’s Hand’. Founded in 2011, By Charlie’s Hand is one girl armed with a scalpel, lots of patience and a touch of OCD, as well as a love of coloured paper and tea. Charlotte has been producing highly detailed and intricate works which often explore nature, repetitive motifs and symmetry.

Mr Stag

Mr Stag

Charlotte’s papercuts have a unique style which echoes Charlotte’s previous structured approach, which often explored colour and repetitive patterns, bringing order to the natural elements while adding a contemporary twist to traditional rhymes and familiar motifs.  Birds, trees, plants and animals feature heavily in her work but the chaos of nature is given a distinctive shape, most often becoming contained within perfect circles and hearts.

These original papercuts have also grown into a range of products that includes giclee prints, greeting cards and cushion covers. Joining forces with Scottish jewellery designer and maker Molly Ginnelly (a jeweller also showcasing her amazing work in Heart Gallery at the moment) on a continuing collaboration, Charlotte’s work has found new mediums that combine both artists’ styles, leading to the distinctive and highly wearable ‘When Molly met Charlie’ collection of earrings, necklaces and brooches made of formica and silver.

Yasemin Wigglesworth

Yasemin Wigglesworth – papercut artist

Yasemin is a papercut artist based in Gloucestershire and hand cuts all her own original designs from paper using a surgeon’s scalpel.  Each piece is complete, cut from a single sheet of paper. Nature, The Arts & Crafts Movement, Iznik ceramic designs and East Asian woodblock prints and tapestries are her main sources of inspiration.

Thumbelina

Thumbelina

Yasemin regularly exhibits work in a few galleries across the UK and has recently started to have some of her designs published as greeting cards. Heart Gallery has worked with Yasemin before but the fairytale theme for our current exhibition ‘May All Your Dreams Come True’ really excited Yasemin and the pieces she has created for us are stunning.

So, a few images to whet your appetite but if they haven’t tempted you enough then maybe Ursula Holden Gill can! Ursula is one of the North’s most innovative, award winning Storytellers. Her quirky, unique sets are influenced largely by 19th Century Music Hall, Lancashire Dialect, Westmorland Clogging, Folk, Traditional and Original Song, Contemporary Dance, Puppetry, Clean but Cheeky Stand Up Acts and essentially, life. This has led her to be frequently described as a cross somewhere between Gracie Fields and Billy Connolly!

Urusla Holden Gill

Urusla Holden Gill

Ursula will be spending Sunday 13 May with us presenting a song and story set she calls Sightings of the Little People – suitable for adults and children alike. It explores the idea that fairy sightings have been associated with – and are responsible for – the naming of more places in the British Isles than anywhere else in the world and that in the North of England alone we proudly boast numerous fairy bridges and glens, a few sets of standing stones, waterfalls, cottage gardens, and a variety of hills and wells! By revealing how such places came to take their title Ursula will welcome all who attend the launch into a most controversial debate that has fascinated artists for hundreds of years – are fairies real or not… and if so, what are they? Fanciful Friend or Malevolent Foe? Further, who can see the little people and how?

See you all at Heart Gallery, Hebden Bridge on Sunday May 13 from 12pm – 5pm for fairy cakes, angel dust and magical stories and of course an eclectic mix of jewellery and craft inspired by fairytales, folklore, myths and dreams to tempt and delight xXx

November 18, 2011

A great day on Sunday started with a very moving sight for me which I hadn’t realised would be happening.  I had been getting the gallery ready for opening for our What A Cracker Exhibition and I heard a brass band. I was just in time to see this band and people walked through Hebden Bridge and along Market Street at 11am.

Meet The Maker – Kyleigh Orlebar

September 21, 2011
Kyleight Orlebar - papercut artist

Kyleight Orlebar - Graphic Designer and Papercut Artist

Kyleigh’s love of typography, an obsession with handcutting intricate shapes with a scalpel, a long career in graphic design and a head full of song lyrics (where maths should be!) has led her on a very creative journey.

Caravan Of Love

Caravan Of Love - Kyleigh

Kyleigh is inspired by great typography, beautiful silhouettes plus the song lyrics or phrases themselves. She is completely inspired by the work of Rob Ryan and Julene Harrison. Wanting to give it a go she decided to give her husband a papercut for Valentines Day using lyrics from their first dance at their wedding (Forever my Friend by Ray LaMontagne) so she sparked up Adobe Illustrator and set about designing her first papercut. Kyleigh found she loved the design process – making sure each letter was clinging onto each other, the lines held together with little flourishes and hearts….and so it began!

Kyleigh handcut papercut

Putting it all together in Adobe Illustrator is almost like working out a puzzle, moving words around, making them larger, smaller… adding small strips, details and embellishments to the design to hold it all together once cut.

Time After Time - Kyleigh

Time After Time - Kyleigh

Working from her garden studio, she really enjoys the process of handcutting the papercut. The fresh new blades on her favourite scalpels (swivel and fixed), the steaming mug of tea, audiobook, podcast or music on in the background and she starts to cut. Piece by piece the design emerges from the paper with great satisfaction on her part.

Kyleigh gets very inspired by the actual wording/quote/lyrics. Words are beautiful. They look beautiful. So when she gets a commission for lovely words Kyleigh is a happy bunny. The words influence a design too, stressing an important word by making it larger for example. Her framing is uncomplicated so that the words can speak for themselves.

With a houseful of children (15 and 13 year olds plus 7 month old baby), pets and her wonderful husband there is never a dull moment! Kyleigh has just celebrated her first year of self-employment and is so proud to say it is going from strength to strength with some exciting plans for the future.

Bring Me Sunshine - handcut papercut - Kyleigh

Bring Me Sunshine - Kyleigh

You can commission Kyleigh to handcut an original piece of work based on your own favorite song or phrase so do call in to discuss this with us. In 2011 when we hold our third annual Wedding Show we are really hoping that Kyleigh will be introducing her lasercut wedding invitations for you to see. Kyleigh has to quote for having them lasercut for you to your design ideas and they are stunning. The design Kyleigh did below features a couple of swallows as swallows had just arrived on the couple’s land and this was the groom’s suggestion to incorporate into the design somewhere.

Meet The Maker – Yasemin Wigglesworth

June 15, 2011
Yasemin Wigglesworth - Papercut Artist

Yasemin Wigglesworth - Papercut Artist (check out the image in the background!)

Yasemin came across paper cutting a few years ago and has been fascinated by it ever since.

Customer's commissioned papercut

'here is the root of the root' papercut

As a self-taught papercut artist, her work continues to develop in new and unexpected ways which Yasemin finds exciting. Finishing a complete papercut piece is hugely satisfying  and therapeutic.

Blue Tree papercut

Blue Tree papercut

People always say, ‘You must be a very patient and precise person’.  Yasemin’s family would laugh at that; she is definitely very particular about her work and aesthetics but quite chaotic and disorderly in almost everything else. Having grown up with an artistic mother and grandfather, art has always played a big part in Yasemin’s life and she has always taken courses in her spare time.

Yasemin’s family home is full of interesting and beautiful art, antiques and pretty things that her parents have collected from around the world. Her biggest influences are nature, The Arts & Crafts movement, East Asian woodblock prints and tapestries, and having grown up in Istanbul, Iznic ceramic designs.

Proud Peacock papercut

Proud Peacock papercut

Yasemin sketches designs in pencil first and experiments with rough cuts until she achieves a balanced piece. Yasemin tends to use wallpaper for her final cuts as the pattern adds an element of surprise. Each piece is cut by hand using a surgeon’s scalpel on the reverse of the wallpaper. She roughly sketches the design so she has a guide but never sticks to the pencil lines as she finds it too restricting.

Positive Tree papercut

Some of Yasemin’s pieces are influenced by poems and a few lines are included. Words are cut freehand on the front of the wallpaper with no pencil outline as it marks the wallpaper.  Each papercut is entire and cut from one sheet of paper.

Yasemin’s aim is to produce affordable, original, unpretentious framed pieces for people’s homes. Have you got a favourite roll of wallpaper you would like Yasemin to use to create a bespoke papercut just for you? Call in to Heart Gallery to discuss your requirements.

Yasemin is looking forward to dedicating more of her time to creating and papercutting once her two young sons are both at school from September and Heart Gallery is also looking forward to seeing more of Yasemin’s amazing creations.
