Meet The Maker – Moira Fuller

June 2, 2012
Moira Fuller - printmaker

Moira Fuller – photographer and printmaker

For as long as Moira can remember, she has been making. She grew up in Scotland, surrounded at home by scissors, paper and glue, and though her supplies and projects became more involved, the joy of making something out of raw materials stayed with her.

Absolution from Wolves are Sublime

Moira has used digital negatives with cyanotype printing, an early photographic process, to create these limited edition prints for our exhibition.

All Gone from Wolves are Sublime

All Gone from Wolves are Sublime

Moira’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection is entitled ‘Wolves are Sublime, but Dogs are not’ and explores the gap between the everyday and the magical.  Our imaginations transform the ordinary to the extraordinary; the abandoned place and the history we see; the ink on the page and the story that unfolds. We conjure up these existences, like the emperor’s new clothes, telling ourselves, and each other, stories – or perhaps, every so often, we glimpse the world as it really is.

Siren Song from Wolves are Sublime

Siren Song from Wolves are Sublime

Moira’s other collection ‘Into The Woods’ is a series of works depicting woodlands, frozen lakes and abandoned buildings and invites you to add your own story.   Moira’s work is inspired by woodlands, old tales and memories. The woods always struck her as a place of hidden things, of calm and excitement, and a feeling of stillness being somewhere so old yet constantly changing.  Using the cyanotype process to capture not only an image, but a moment of light, as well as the delicacy of the prints and materials used, mirrors for her the fleeting and permanent aspects of the woods.

Winter Solitude from Into the Woods

Winter Solitude from Into the Woods

Developed using UV light, the prints echo the permanent and the suggested; the stability of an image and the fleeting moment of light that created it. Moria’s limited edition of 100 Cyanotype prints are numbered, signed and dated and we also have a couple of them framed. Moira has kindly made us some gorgeous little sketchbooks too so call in soon to see them, thank you.

Meet The Maker – Nicola Taylor

May 18, 2012
Nicola Taylor - self portrait photographer

Nicola Taylor – self portrait photographer

Nicola is a self portrait photographer from rural North Yorkshire. Her career began at the age of 33 when she left her job as a stockbroker and with the help of her savings took a year out.

Like Ghosts from an Enchanter Fleeing

Like Ghosts from an Enchanter Fleeing

Nicola had realised that while she stayed in an extremely stressful job that she didn’t enjoy, she would never figure out what to do next. In that year she was a yoga teacher, a blogger and a photography student. But it was when she was studying photography at the London College of Communication that she really found her way.

The Weaker Side

The Weaker Side

Her images take inspiration from tales and folklore of the North Yorkshire Moors told to her as a child. These stories of witches and ghosts, spirits and fairies, lost loves and obscure protagonists, are part of a rich tradition of exploring our relationship to place through the stories we tell.

Do not cringe and make yourself small

Do Not Cringe And Make Yourself Small

Nicola uses her images to express her imagination and pay homage to the mystical and magical stories she loves. Her favourites include The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, The Magic Faraway Tree, Alice in Wonderland, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Star Wars.

La Que Sabe

La Que Sabe

Nicola’s images use the environment and the character to suggest a narrative and invite the viewer to explore their own relationship to stories by allowing them to fill in the detail.

Music for those who listen

Music For Those Who Listen

Nicola says that she never felt creative but when she realised that photography did not always have to be documentary, but could also be fantastical, she knew she had found her tool. Nicola has received international recognition and her work has been sold in Europe and the USA. She is to be featured in an upcoming short film on creativity in the UK, shot by BAFTA award winning filmmaker Martin Smith for Stolichnaya Vodka.

Heart Gallery is so proud that Nicola has carefully chosen us to showcase her photography and hope to see you in our picture gallery drooling over these limited editions soon x

So, a few images to whet your appetite but if they haven’t tempted you enough then maybe Ursula Holden Gill can! Ursula is one of the North’s most innovative, award winning Storytellers. Her quirky, unique sets are influenced largely by 19th Century Music Hall, Lancashire Dialect, Westmorland Clogging, Folk, Traditional and Original Song, Contemporary Dance, Puppetry, Clean but Cheeky Stand Up Acts and essentially, life. This has led her to be frequently described as a cross somewhere between Gracie Fields and Billy Connolly!

Urusla Holden Gill

Ursula will be spending Sunday 13 May with us presenting a song and story set she calls Sightings of the Little People – suitable for adults and children alike. It explores the idea that fairy sightings have been associated with – and are responsible for – the naming of more places in the British Isles than anywhere else in the world and that in the North of England alone we proudly boast numerous fairy bridges and glens, a few sets of standing stones, waterfalls, cottage gardens, and a variety of hills and wells! By revealing how such places came to take their title Ursula will welcome all who attend the launch into a most controversial debate that has fascinated artists for hundreds of years – are fairies real or not… and if so, what are they? Fanciful Friend or Malevolent Foe? Further, who can see the little people and how?

See you all at Heart Gallery, Hebden Bridge on Sunday May 13 from 12pm – 5pm for fairy cakes, angel dust and magical stories and of course an eclectic mix of jewellery and craft inspired by fairytales, folklore, myths and dreams to tempt and delight xXx

November 18, 2011

A great day on Sunday started with a very moving sight for me which I hadn’t realised would be happening.  I had been getting the gallery ready for opening for our What A Cracker Exhibition and I heard a brass band. I was just in time to see this band and people walked through Hebden Bridge and along Market Street at 11am.

Live with the art you love …

It’s easy and affordable to buy and collect contemporary art and craft at Heart Gallery with Own Art which lets you spread the cost of your purchase over 10 months with an interest free loan.

Own Art loans allow you to borrow from as little as £100 up to a maximum of £2,000 for the purchase of works of art by living artists.

Own Art loans are available from Heart Gallery for the purchase of contemporary art and craft of any kind, and in any media. That means you can choose more or less anything you want from Heart Gallery from paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture, to glassware, ceramics, jewellery, furniture and textiles.

There is no limit on the number of times you can use Own Art, but we recommend that you don’t apply for more than one loan at a time. This is because each loan application is subject to a credit check, and your application may be declined if you have not yet already established a repayment record for an existing Own Art loan, or if the bank considers that the total amount of credit you are asking for is too high in relation to your income.

The minimum you can borrow is £100 (monthly repayment of £10), but this can be used to cover a group of lower value items whose combined total adds up to £100 or more. This means that at Christmas you can purchase a number of presents for your friends and family interest free so there is no need to use your credit card!

If you are buying something more valuable than £2,000 you can use an Own Art loan as a part payment. Please note that you cannot apply for multiple Own Art loans to cover the costs of a single purchase.

Own Art is available to all UK residents over the age of 18, subject to status. This means that you must be able to meet the following criteria in order to be approved for a loan:

  • Over the age of 18
  • A permanent UK resident
  • Working at least 16 hours a week (employed or self-employed)

If you are not working but are married to or living with a partner who does have a full time job, then you may still apply provided that your partner is happy for their employment details to be included on your application form.

You’ll need to have proof of ID with you in the form of a driver’s licence or utility bill, along with a credit or debit card as proof of signature and it only takes 10 minutes!

Staff in Heart Gallery will take you through the loan application process and once you’ve given all the information we need, you’ll get an instant decision.

Once your application has been approved and you’ve signed the paperwork you can take your purchase(s) away with you – simple as that!

Own Art bank partner Hitachi Capital Consumer finance will send you a welcome letter and the 10 monthly payments will be collected by direct debit from your account starting a few weeks after you’ve made your purchase.

Meet The Maker – Tony Wright

November 9, 2010
Tony Wright

Tony Wright

So, where do I start with this one? Many of you will know Tony Wright not as an artist/maker I now showcase in Heart Gallery quite regularly but as singer in the Bradford band Terrorvision, creativity of a different kind!

Tony on stage

Creatively speaking though Tony has just diversified his talents, and he is still singing too both in Terrorvision, who are back in the studio and touring at the moment, and in LaikaDog. LaikaDog was formed on a high Yorkshire moor top. Tony, Paddy and Sim were building dry stone walls and thought it would be a good idea and a warmer past time to form a band and play the tunes they had been inspired to write.

Heart Gallery sells Tony’s little miniature dry stone walls, just like these ones! After a long day building walls on the moors Tony brings home a little bit of Yorkshire stone and chips away at it to make a mini version of the ‘real thing’!

Tony also has a love for photography and Heart Gallery showcased Tony’s collaboration with Stuart Humphrey entitled ‘While You Were Sleeping’ during the summer of 2010. These prints sold well and are still available to order through Heart Gallery.

Tony’s latest love is letterpress and woodcutting! Tony and Stuart are in a mill with no electric but the radio and lamp which they listen to and see by to create various letterpress and woodcut prints. They bought some fab equipment to work with:

then the blocks are inked ready for the paper which is a repeat process for each colour – Tony has to be really careful to get each colour sitting in the right place but the whole process means that each one is unique.

The finished posters are now in Heart Gallery and are a limited edition of 150 of each design, with every one being different to the last one that was printed by hand. These are his tattoo inspired posters now on sale at Heart Gallery:

Call in to see Tony’s dry stone walls and posters soon and watch this space too as I am sure there will be something new from Tony soon if he can squeeze it in with all the touring he’ll be doing! Check out the Terrorision dates for 2011 here - might see you in Leeds!

Meet the Maker – Nigel Hillier

October 14, 2010

Nigel Hillier - Award Winning Photographer, Hebden Bridge

Nigel Hillier - Award Winning Photographer, Hebden Bridge

After successfully exhibiting with Heart Gallery in the summer as part of our Yorkshire In All Its Glory Exhibition, Nigel has chosen Heart Gallery as his local outlet for his amazing photography of the Hebden Bridge area. We are really pleased about this and have created a beautiful space within the gallery for his limited edition framed prints to hang where the light is perfect and the ambience peaceful.

Nigel’s images are the results of many meanderings around the Hebden Bridge area.

Nigel is a full time freelance photographer covering a wide range of photography including portrait, editorial, fashion and commercial, however the Hebden images are a self driven project undertaken on downtime from his day job or as an escape from his `lightroom`..ie. computer.

Sheep in the snow, Colden - Nigel Hillier

Nigel loves the idea of heading out on a photographic trip with no preconceived ideas and then seeing what will unfold during the day (or night). Having been a photographer since he was a teenager, the technicalities of photography are etched into his being so the images are a result of intuition and feeling rather than f stops, shutter speed and the `rules` of composition.

Nigel has photographed in over 30 countries but is always drawn back to capture images on his home ground. In fact Nigel’s Hebden images have won more awards than all his other travel images put together. Awards include Shot Up North winner, Finalist in the Nikon International photo contest, Landscape Photographer of the year winner, Creativematch winner and finalist in LPA portrait awards.

The process of photographing the familiar can create a heightened awareness which sometimes translates into a magical image. Not always of course, Nigel often comes home having not even pressed the shutter but still feeling lucky to live in such a beautiful and intriguing place.

Sitting at home this evening, looking over the beautiful valley I live in as the thunderstorm approaches, it is hard to believe that Hebden Bridge was basking in both sunshine and glory this afternoon as the Handmade Parade made its way from St George’s Square to Calder Holmes Park.

Hebden Bridge 2010 Handmade Parade

Hebden Bridge 2010 Handmade Parade

For those of you reading this that don’t really know much about Hebden Bridge, our Handmade Parade is a community-generated parade led by local artists which celebrates the creativity, variety and the uniqueness of Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire and its surrounding areas.

As an area fiercely proud of its local character our parade is not your average small town parade. So many people visited today; the streets were full, the sun shone and the music sang out.

The Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade is a community event about art not advertisement:

There are no written words or logos and no motorised vehicles, only passionate people and a bespoke not-for-profit community interest company made up of local artists and professional organisers.

The Handmade Parade is a truly  awe-inspiring parade, in which around 650 people wear the fantastic costumes and carry the spectacular parade art made in open parade art workshops and outreach sessions for schools and other community groups.

I was so happy to sneak out of Heart Gallery for 20 minutes to watch some of this today!

Sneaky Peak at Photographic Exhibition

June 12, 2010

Yorkshire – In All Its Glory

For the first time in nearly four years Heart Gallery is holding a photographic exhibition to celebrate our locality and soak up the peace and solitude of our valleys, crags and moorlands. Artists and writers have sought out the stunning beauty of Yorkshire for years. They have been inspired by unspoilt and breathtaking scenery and seduced by its landscape. This exhibition hopes to stir those emotions in our visitors and tempt them to buy a piece of Yorkshire to take home with them! Here is a sneaky peak at some of the prints that will be available from eight talented, local photographers: Take a tongue-in-cheek look into the future with a series of images from Jason Elliott of what life in Hebden Bridge and beyond may look like in 2032 after a few years of Climate Change.

Jason Elliott

Jason Elliott

Jefferson Hammond’s main interest in photography tends to be black and white landscape work and he loves to explore the juxtaposition between a landscape that is primarily derelict whist at the same time possessing a strong sense of charter and a scenic attraction that goes beyond the traditional  notions of scenic beauty.

Steve Morgan was born in Yorkshire, studied at Leeds University and has worked in a lot of places – travelled a lot on Greenpeace ships photographing many of their most celebrated actions and campaigns. Recent work has taken Steve to Everest Base Camp for WWF International and more locally around the South Pennines photographing people in their working landscape for the Watershed Lives project.

Stuart Humphrey and Tony Wright (singer with Bradford based band Terrorvision) both live in Oldfield, Keighley and they got together to create this series of photographs of local points of interest. Something to do rather than watch television on a night, they would head out onto and over the local moors in search of places they wanted show to other people and entitled the set of pictures ‘Whilst You Were Sleeping’.

Steve Morgan lives in Hebden Bridge and is a nationally acclaimed photographer who has many years experience working with Greenpeace and WWF.
Jason Elliott is well known locally for his photographic project ‘500 faces of Hebden Bridge’ to celebrate 2010 being the year that the Packhorse Bridge in the centre of Hebden Bridge will be 500 years old. His Climate Change images certainly make Hebden Bridge look exotic whilst at the same time engaging, informing and raising people’s awareness of the issues.
Miniature dry-stone walls by local artist Tony Wright, lead singer of Bradford based band Terrorvision, are also available to buy alongside his breathtaking photographs taken with his friend Stuart Humphrey. They have called this collection for Heart Gallery ‘While You Were Sleeping’.
Jefferson Hammond has over twenty years experience of photographing the South Pennines landscape, predominantly in black and white.
Hilly Fletcher’s ‘Eating Disorder’ series of fine art photographs were first exhibited at Heart Gallery in 2007 where they were spotted and as a result taken to thestudio NW London. Hilly’s collection for YORKSHIRE – IN ALL ITS GLORY is sure to attract the same attention.
Sarah Mason has exhibited previously with Heart Gallery for our annual Wedding Show ‘I DO’ which launches on Valentine’s Day. For this exhibition Sarah is showcasing her landscapes  as she is fascinated by how quickly a landscape can change after a sudden shower or with a subtle shift in the light.
