Our new stationery range at Heart Gallery

Our new stationery range at Heart Gallery

We first spotted this lovely range back in July and fell in love! We knew you would love it as much as we do and just couldn’t wait for it to arrive.

Paris paper tape

Paris paper tape

We had to delay the order whilst we sorted out the insurance after the summer flooding in Hebden Bridge which affected so many businesses including Heart Gallery. Priorities for us obviously changed for a few months as the clean up operation began on the gallery and all the paperwork had to be collated for the loss adjuster.

Our energies were concentrated on getting back open again and remaining open for our customers so the stationery order was put on the back burner for a short while!

But this only meant that we have been more eagerly awaiting the parcel’s arrival … and yesterday it landed!

Meet The Maker – Alix Swan

May 9, 2012
Alix Swan - Designer Maker

Alix Swan – Designer Maker

Described as a ‘textile artist’, ‘fine art bookmaker’, sometimes ‘paper artist’, Alix is a designer-maker with a love of combining paper, print, graphics, textiles and found materials.

Badges - Alix Swan

Badges – Alix Swan

Apparently for Alix it all began with a paper doll she made who told her that her name was Alice. Alice started Alix reminiscing about childhood story times with her mother and grandmother and the world of books and stories these opened up. Alix remembered too how she drew constantly, cutting out her miniature portraits and using them in larger storyboards and little books. Now her Fine Art bookworks are based in traditional tales. She fuses old and new technologies through found materials, original drawing, digital photography, stitch, collage and bookbinding together with direct quotations to echo ideas and phrases that are universally familiar.

Artist books - Alix Swan

Artist books – Alix Swan

Everything is made by Alix from start to finish.  She cuts, sews and assemble by hand.  She has a computer, digital camera and four old typewriters and her home is a treasure trove of found and second-hand materials. Alix is happiest working on a small, even miniature, scale and her eye for detail and finish is of great importance.

Thumbelina - Alix Swan

Thumbelina – Alix Swan

The themes of her work are vintage stories, rhymes and sayings.  She has learned the universal human need for these traditional forms and the importance of keeping them alive which is why she offers her work as a quirky twist on the traditional that connects with reminiscence, rediscovery and joy.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Alix Swan

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – Alix Swan

Heart Gallery awarded Alix an Outstanding Makers’ Award at Holmfirth in 2011 and we are so proud to be showcasing Alix’s work for the first time here in Hebden Bridge for our new exhibition ‘May All Your Dreams Come True’ which is inspired by fairytales, folklore, stories and dreams.

Rachael Taylor - Surface Pattern Designer

Rachael Taylor - Surface Pattern Designer

Rachael Taylor is a fun, enthusiastic creative designer and textile artist with over several years industry experience in a variety of fields. Since leaving university this young designer has achieved so much in such a small time span working for a number of prestigious clients worldwide.

Originally from the Wirral, Merseyside (UK) Rachael graduated from the University of Leeds in 2005, with a BA (Hons) in Textile & Fashion Design. Her first job was as a print & design technician whilst also working as a part time freelancer in the textile industry. She then went on to progress with her textile and stitched screen printed pieces and held her first solo exhibition called ‘stitched’ in 2006 at the Brahm Gallery Leeds. Later that year Rachael was awarded 1st prize in the Janome creative competiton for a layered paper skirt design.

Then specialising in surface pattern design, she developed her early signature style of layering, textures and quirky hand drawn linework. This style is present in both her screenprinted pieces and digital work. Wanting to obtain further experience and technical knowledge Rachael applied for a job with one of the greetings market leaders, where she worked as a mac designer for two years specialising in surface pattern design. She then set up her own design studio in May 2008 (based in Leeds) where she now works as a freelance surface pattern designer and textile artist.

Rachael has recently had over twenty pieces of her work published in four renowned designs books including ‘Print and Pattern’ by Bowie Style (LKP Publishing), ‘Patterns‘ by Drusilla Cole, (LKP Publishing and ‘The Exciting World of Pattern Design‘ by Zeixs Feierabend (Unique Books)’ ‘Patterns’ by Maomao/booQs publishing. She is also featured in the keenly awaited ‘Print and Pattern 2’ by Bowie Style (LKP Publishing).  Her unique web styling and design attracted the attention of ‘by Zeixs Feierabend (Unique Books)’ as they showcase her website in their brand new book ‘Websites 3’. Rachael regularly receives design commissions from trend forecasting companies and has had work published in trend books for Trend Bible & Mudpie. Her designs and products are regularly featured in the press and have made appearances on TV and more recently has attracted a celebrity fan base.

Rachael likes to bring her own personality to her work and creates fun quirky designs ‘patterns to make you happy’. Her positive & energetic approach was recognised in 2009 as she was awarded the title of ‘the happiest person in Britain 2009′ from her excited and happy twitter posts. Her patterns are spontaneous as Rachael loves to draw with her right and left hand and sometimes even with her eyes closed. This way her patterns are unique & full of energy, she takes inspiration from everything around her and a lot of her motifs come from her own mood & personality.

Rachael played a huge part in the Liverpool Design Stars challenge for 2011. She was commissioned by the Design Initiative to oversee the surface pattern category. This involved writing the brief, presenting and running workshops in schools, judging entries, selecting winners, presenting awards and delivering a masterclass weekend for select nominees. Rachael was invited to speak at the renowned Do What You Love art & creative enterprise retreat (held in May 2011) in front of an international audience.

Meet The Maker – Corrina Rothwell

June 21, 2011

Right, let’s see…. this is a different approach to meet the maker because Corrina is a different kind of maker!!

Corrina Rothwell - Digital Artist and Illustrator

Corrina Rothwell - Digital Artist and Illustrator

Let’s imagine a frog leaping from lily pad to lily pad.  Each lily pad represents an important stage on Corrina’s creative journey.  Plop, she is born (Rochdale, Lancs.)  (Being born is essential to creativity).  Plop, mum and dad plonk her naked on a roll of wallpaper with a paint brush and a pot of red paint.  She is very small.  Sadly she does not still have that first painting of hers!  Plop….you get the idea now…. she goes to school and draws a Mother’s Day card in felt-tips.  It’s a tree with millions of tiny pink flowers.  Corrina’s teacher sends her round school to show the other teachers and says she’s really gone to town on it.  Corrina draws and paints a lot but she’s not very good.  She does a special painting on a big board, lots of pattern and colour (see unnaturally-posed picture).

Corrina and her rather large painting

Corrina and her rather large painting

Corrina is maybe 8 when she does this.  Her dad paints over it at some point, probably when he can’t afford any board for his own painting.  In later years he gives her some of his rejected paintings to paint over which makes it ok. At 13 Corrina’s best friend and her make bow-ties and sell them at school because sadly they are in fashion at the time. At 16 she starts A-level art along with French, German and English, but soon drops it thinking that she can do art on her own anytime and she doesn’t need to be taught.  An ardent vegetarian, she designs some MacDonalds Murder Burger t-shirts and sells them at Grass Roots in Manchester.  She also sells one to her history teacher which she’s extremely pleased about!

Mistakenly Corrina ends up doing European Studies with Dutch at Hull University.  She drops out because she hates it and she’s not an academic.  She goes on the Enterprise Allowance Scheme and paints fabric and makes it into cushions.  She also takes an evening class in screen-printing, which she loves, and produces her first greetings cards.

From there Corrina moves to Nottingham and buys herself an old Singer sewing machine. Plop. She trys a bit of freehand embroidery, feels right at home with it, and that’s what she does, mostly happily, for the next 14 years ….. although there was a ‘gosh that’s clever’ aspect to her textile work which made it appealing to people, it certainly lost its appeal to Corrina …plop…plop…plop

'she just couldn't behave herself with cheese' embroidery - Heart Gallery's best seller

'she just couldn't behave herself with cheese' embroidery - Heart Gallery's best seller

Corrina gets really bored of sewing and frustrated with what it can’t do. She has in my mind a way that she wants her images to look and she can’t get them to look that way with the sewing machine. She realises that what is important to her is the image itself, not the way in which it’s created. Corrina thinks that maybe she’s a frustrated print-maker and contemplates going in that direction. However, a) she’s too impatient to learn b) the equipment is too expensive to buy and c) there’s nowhere in Nottingham where she can do it if she can’t do it at home. On a whim – plop – she buys herself a Bamboo Fun graphics tablet, plugs it into her laptop and she’s off! Corrina takes to it like a duck to water (we’re still in that pond) and finds it fun (does what it says on the tin) versatile and full of exciting potential.

Assumed Dead

So there you have it, Corrina is now working on new designs for her greetings cards which Heart Gallery sell and is sitting on her Nottingham lily pad which is going to flower beautifully this year with all the amazing opportunities coming her way.

Don't Mind Me

Don't Mind Me

Corrina has a selection of prints in the clothing store Urban Outfitters in both Manchester and Kensington, which is very exciting – she loves the idea of artwork mingling with everydayness….and of course Urban Outfitters is a very cool shop!

As for new artwork, Corrina is in the throes of a pigeon obsession at the moment!

Unexpected Item

Excited by how much fun it was importing photos of pigeons and giving them things to say, she went out with her camera, took lots of pigeon pics and a new batch of drawings was born.

Corrina has used pigeons in her work before, but things came to a head when she designed the poster for the upcoming Secret Garden Craft Fair in Nottingham on Saturday 25th June.
