CHRISTMAS AT HEART

Yes …. it is that time of the year again! Christmas always feels like it comes around again so quickly and I don’t mind that because I love this time of the year – it’s a really lovely, warm, cosy, happy family time for me. Although there are loved ones no longer with me I always feel their presence more around Christmas than at any other time of the year and know that they are gathering too …. keeping those dreams alive and Christmas at heart.

Christmas at Heart Gallery is always a ‘family’ gathering too as we all look forward to it so much and start to get excited as soon as the first parcel of work arrives from one of our many talented makers …. we almost feel as if we are gathering around the tree Christmas morning to unwrap our delights! The reality is of course that we are unwrapping them in their new home in Heart Gallery, displaying them for your delight (as well as ours) and watching them get admired, purchased and wrapped ready for their next new home!

This year we do feel that Christmas in Hebden Bridge is a crucial one for all of us. As small independents that were affected by the devastating ‘summer’ flooding back in June and July, we are hoping that our beautiful Hebden Bridge will be a destination for many and that our streets will be alive with locals and visitors eager to support us all and shop locally.

I have had many conversations with customers and friends lately that have all said they really want to try harder this year and buy all their gifts and provisions for Christmas in Hebden Bridge so that is something that has been really uplifting to hear. I personally have never found it difficult to spend in my own town and support both my neighbours on Market Street and traders in the rest of the town throughout the year anyway … to me Christmas is no different in that respect, I just spend more!

Being aware that money is a lot tighter for all of us at the moment has meant the type of gorgeous work we have chosen for the Winter and our Christmas Exhibition has had a few restraints put on it so that we can offer a purse friendly range to suit all budgets. One thing that has not changed however is the quality of the work on the shelves and in the cabinets at Heart Gallery!

Meet The Maker – Clare Caulfield

Clare Caulfield – Yorkshire based Artist and Printmaker

Clare Caulfield is a Yorkshire based Artist and Printmaker who graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Surface Pattern Design from Staffordshire University in 2000. Combining the processes of drawing, painting, collage and various printmaking techniques Clare captures the excitement, life and vibrancy of many of the world’s most enticing cities including Paris, New York, Venice, Rome, London, Sydney and Prague. The magic of each location being recreated in Clare’s very distinctive and appealing illustrative style of working.

Drawing has always been a very important part of Clare’s work. She is fascinated by architecture be it the Midtown skyscrapers of Manhattan, The Grand Canal in Venice or simply capturing Parisian life outside a brightly canopied pavement cafe, she strives to create spontaneous lively line work.

Clare uses her sketchbook and camera to record and capture her experiences whist visiting each of these cities, on returning to the studio she then interprets this information to produce her quirky pen and watercolour and mixed-media paintings. For Clare the initial pen drawing is the most important part of the whole process needing to achieve a lively and fluid quality of line. From the initial marks on the paper, Clare chooses not to plan out her composition in pencil first, but to always work directly in pen from the beginning.

Closer to home Clare has turned her attention to the historic Shambles of York, County Arcade in Leeds and the beautiful architecture to be found within Saltaire Village: Salts Mill, The United Reformed Church, the shop fronts of Victoria Road and the cobbles of Albert Terrace have all been interpreted in her instantly recognisable style.

Clare’s love of drawing and use of line lend themselves perfectly to her work as a printmaker. She produces her handmade original prints at West Yorkshire Print Workshop where she also teaches weekend screenprint courses. Screen printing allows Clare to transfer the lively original drawings often taken directly from her sketchbook produced whilst on her travels, onto both paper and canvas enabling her prints to maintain this great sense of spontaneity. Within many of her screenprints Clare combines elements of hand painted acrylic and watercolour resulting in each print being a truly individual piece in itself.

Clare also produces drypoint prints, a method of intaglio printmaking as she enjoys the rich velvety line quality it achieves. The prints are created by firstly drawing the image by scratching directly onto the plate with a sharp needle. For each print made the plate is re-coated with ink and then carefully wiped each time therefore every print is original and unique. Only small editions can be made as the plate wears down very quickly during the printing process. Some of these prints also combine elements of chiné colle allowing Clare to introduce subtle areas of colour and texture into her compositions.

Clare exhibits both her paintings and original prints with galleries throughout the country in regular solo and group shows. She has been represented by CCA Galleries at the Affordable Art Fair in London exhibiting her collection of hand painted screenprints on canvas of famous landmarks in the capital including The Royal Albert Hall, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace.

Clare’s work documents her travels to some of the world’s greatest cities including Venice, Florence, New York and London. Most recently Paris has provided much inspiration for a series of new pen & watercolour paintings from compositions of Notre Dame to bustling streetscenes. Drawing has always been a very important part of Clare’s work. She is fascinated by architecture be it the Midtown skyscrapers of Manhattan, The Grand Canal Venice or simply capturing Parisian life outside a brightly canopied pavement café, from which she strives to create spontaneous lively linework. She enjoys the scratchy line quality achieved using dip pen & ink, the weight of the line altering with the amount of pressure applied. Clare also transfers the lively drawings taken directly from her sketchbook onto paper and canvas by means of screenprinting which she combines with hand-painted acrylic. Therefore every canvas is an individual piece in itself. Heart Gallery stocks Clare’s originals, limited edition prints and a range of handmade screenprinted cards of Italy, London, New York, Paris, Prague and Saltaire.
