Joining us on 23 June is Sarah Mason, a local photographer who sees herself as the storyteller of your day; creating each chapter in pictures. In Sarah’s words – “I am here to capture those details big and small, and to make sure your day is documented how you remember it, and a little bit more…”. We have worked with Sarah before so totally agree; she is very special and so easy to work with, ‘Sarah manages to evoke such a sense of feeling in her work. She creates photos with soul.’

Nicky & Ben, one of Sarah’s recent wedding couples.
See more of Sarah’s work over on her website.

Alongside Sarah we have local artist Julia Ogden who will be unveiling a brand new (and exclusive to Heart Gallery) range of wedding stationery so you can discuss your requirements with her:

A sample of Julia’s pencil drawings
And we also have Sue Leslie with us to chat to you about alternative wedding bouquets using handmade papers. Her buttonholes, favours, confetti packets and table decorations also use paper and you can colour co-ordinate everything to your scheme and personalise if you wish:

And last but not least The Willow Garden will have a beautiful floral display for you to feast your eyes on and two lovely member of their team will be on hand to chat to about colour schemes and ideas … and they have such fabulous ideas for all occasions and budgets:

The Willow Garden, Hebden Bridge
The Willow Garden is a local, friendly flower shop in Hebden Bridge offering over 20 years’ experience styling and arranging flowers for all occasions, especially ‘I dos’. The shop itself is filled with an abundance of seasonal blooms and foliage which can be individually styled following a personal consultation with a member of the team.

Vintage bouquet from The Willow Garden
They love the natural beauty of meadow flowers, scented herbs, vintage roses and majestic peonies.

Strawberries!
Whether the scene for your celebration is opulent glamour, wild and romantic or simple and rustic the talented team at The Willow Garden can help make your big day magical and memorable.

Cream bouquet
In our beautiful garden on Sunday 23 June there will be two local outside caterers setting up for you to buy and sample their offerings. One is ‘Go The Whole Hog’ who I really have to say make the most delicious pork sandwiches I have ever eaten. Mandy buys her pork from local butcher Stephen Maskill, slow roasts it in the most amazing juices and accompanies it with her special homemade stuffing, home cooked apple sauce and the crispiest of crackling with the juiciest of gravy….delicious!

The other is the ‘The Milk Bar’ who provide milkshakes for lots of events as an alternative for guests at wedding that don’t drink … a hit with the young of course! You will be able to buy smaller versions of a handful of their best sellers including Dime Bar, Aero Mint and Skittles milkshakes! For your wedding you can chose the menu so come along and discuss your requirements with them.

So there you have it; a snippet of what’s in store for our fourth ‘I DO’ Exhibition which launches on Sunday 23 June at 12pm and continues until 28 July but remember … if you want to meet Sarah, Julia, Sue, Jane and Helen to discuss your requirements then they will only be at the launch on the 23 June so get there early and enjoy!

Whilst researching for the new displays for the run up to Valentine’s Day it got me thinking about love of course so here is a little blog post of things I love that are now in Heart Gallery for you to love too …

Bear Hug – Julia Ogden
Original pencil drawings, giclee prints and cards based on Love, Friendship and Support by our very own super talented Julia Ogden.

‘And on’ partnership pair of silver rings with diamond
Diana Porter’s jewellery range includes her signature ‘and on’ partnership rings, ‘and on’ bangle and ‘I who is you who is I’ set of silver bangles.

close up of detail on the notebook case
Fabulous leather pieces concentrating on music lovers and bookworms by emerging local artist Rod Boyes.

Kindred Spirit
Andy’s etched glass work was a hit at Christmas and we are so chuffed with his new pieces. Perfect for homemade drinks such as damson gin, lemoncello vodka but these lab bottles work really well in the bathroom for shampoo and conditioner too.

Silver and 9ct gold heart rings
Karen’s popular silver and 9ct gold heart range now has a cute little addition of these rings.

Silk Scarf digitally printed from a hand-dyed original design
Sarita’s Reminiscence Collection of floaty scarves and lavender filled pouches and eye-masks will make a lovely gift not just for a Valentine but for a Mum too as Mothers’ Day is not that far away.

Ethical recycled silver jewelery
Ali’s ethical jewellery is inspired by her love of dancing and the dynamic lines of movements she creates whilst dancing.

Ceramic Hearts (can be personalised)
We love Laura’s ceramic hearts and they are certainly the perfect little love token at this time of the year. Our personalised service includes bridal favours matched to the wedding colours where possible with the wedding date stamped on as a great keepsake.

Ceramic Hearts (can be personalised)
And there you have it, a little snippet of new pieces we love and hope you love too….Love isn’t love until you give it away.
Speaking of love, I can’t end this blog post without an image from Kate Lycett though. A customer sadly lost her Dad recently and with a little bit of money he left her she really wanted something that reminded her of him and where he lived so every time she looks at this she will remember the years filled with love that they spent together:

So ‘silly season’ is most definitely upon us now in Heart Gallery and we are positively glowing with cheer and enjoying the festive atmosphere in Hebden Bridge. The Valley of Lights events recently really brought our community together and it was an amazing celebration for businesses and homeowners that had been affected by the floods but got through it and renovated and re-opened. With a sense of pride for what we have all achieved the Valley of Lights attracted approximately 10,000 visitors from far and wide and gave the upper Calder valley the boost it needed to face Christmas.

With the Festive Fandango now well and truly underway we can see at Heart Gallery that people are making more of a conscious effort to stay local and support the many small independent shops in our great town. Every year I do this as I feel so blessed to have a wealth of choice on my doorstep but this year more and more people are supporting Hebden Bridge businesses which is fantastic to see. Festive Fandango is now in its third year and gathering pace. It’s not rocket science! All you need to do is spend a minimum of £5 in 5 separate Hebden Bridge shops, get a sticker, collect all 5, complete the card and hand it in or post it to our Visitor Centre by the Marina. You are then given a discount voucher booklet for January and entered into the draw to win a £750 hamper of goodies donated by all the lovely shops in our great town.

So many of our fabulous customers are thinking outside the (gift) box this year and I just wanted to share a couple with you that have got our creative juices flowing here at Heart Gallery so thank you to those that planted the seeds for those ideas!

![[dorothyparker]](http://heartgalleryblog.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/dorothyparker.jpeg?w=450&h=629)
Andy Poplar’s amazingly clever etched glass lab bottles have been bought to fill with home infused damson gin for presents by one very artistic customer who is also a member of our fabulous Hebden Bridge WI. Then this last weekend two guys bought the larger version of Andy’s lab bottle for their bathroom to keep purple shampoo and conditioner in … I will be borrowing that idea too!
I think everyone in our town should bottle a bit of Hebden Spirit don’t you?

The same lovely lady who has been making damson gin all year came back for one of Rosie’s handmade mini wooden chopping boards we have in Elm, Oak, Tulip and Zebrano …. not for cheese but for lemons and limes to go with the gin of course!

So there you have it folks, a few ideas thinking outside the (gift) box and keeping your pennies in the town along with the chance to win a £750 hamper – simples I say!

I have apologies to make as I been a little bit quiet lately; both on this blog and on a social front with friends and family! The reason was the enormous amount of work that went into this event which took place last Friday at the Hebden Bridge Town Hall.

Hebden Spirit Creative Auction
However, the hard work of myself and the great team I worked with paid off on Friday night when £6491 was raised! This amount was above and beyond what we all expected, especially considering the initial idea came from one of my ceramicists on twitter … little did we know that Helen Russell’s seed would grow so big and so wide and attract the generosity of so many creatives and collectors.

Helen Russell
The night of the floods Helen watched with horror as many of her favourite haunts in Hebden were damaged and friend’s lives affected. She doesn’t live in the town but both personally and professionally it is a home from home and it quickly became obvious that many others around the UK felt the same. In a moment of frustration at not being able to help she suggested on Twitter that a creative fundraising auction might send a message of support to those affected. An hour later saw a list of 20 artists wanting to donate and Hebden Spirit was born.

The Creative Auction catalogue painstakingly put together by Alison Bartram and Richard Aked and kindly printed for Hebden Spirit by Lamberts
As the owner of Heart Gallery, a business that was hit by the floods with the building damaged and stock ruined, I understood the impact of what this devastating act of nature would do not only to my business I had worked hard to build for 6 years but to Hebden Bridge itself.

Alison in Heart Gallery
All businesses in Hebden Bridge would be affected by the floods, even if they hadn’t been affected physically by the flood waters. Negative reporting by the press meant that members of the public were given the impression that we were down and out, closed and boarded up! We needed to tell them we most certainly weren’t closed but OPEN FOR BUSINESS and ready for them to come back and visit our beautiful town. I got involved in the auction as I could see it was such a positive event for the town and it focused on supporting the community.
Amy Leader, Business Development Officer at The Town Hall where the auction took place on Friday night, has seen that the floods in Hebden Bridge have encouraged businesses and individuals in our town to collaborate more than ever with really exciting results. The fact that the auction raised so much money is positive for the town in so many ways; as a show of support, and also to fund projects that remind people why Hebden Bridge is so unique.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS
The auction attracted a total of 103 lots, donated from artists all over the UK, but with a strong emphasis on talent from Hebden Bridge itself. Many kind donations of jewellery and craft turned up at Heart Gallery from my makers; past, present and future and others were handed in at the Town Hall by local artists based in studios in Hebden Bridge or working from home. The Post Office also had to cope with numerous packages of various sizes turning up from around the UK and Ireland from creatives who had heard about the fundraising auction taking place. From tigers …

Amur Ambush – Stella Mays
… to textiles …

Textile necklace with detachable corsage - Lindsay Taylor
… ladies …

Woman in dress – Sarah McDade
… to lampshades ….

Lampshades – Karen Revill at revillrevill.com
… from birds …

Julia Ogden – Hebden Houses
… to bowls …

Jenny Tidman – felt bowls
… silver …

Jodie Hook – silver ribbon necklace
…to sexy …

Angela Smyth – A Grand Entrance
… there was something for everyone and boy did everyone turn up on the night and thoroughly enjoy themselves.

I spoke to Jason afterwards and he declared that the Creative Auction had been so successful that it meant we could financially support lots of ideas that have been developed since the floods. We are only able to do that through the generosity of the artists that donated work, the people that turned up to bid on the night and the team of volunteers that put the whole thing together. We are all so proud that our hard work and determination to make this Creative Auction a success for Hebden Bridge was rewarded on the night with £6491 in the bank!
Hebden Bridge is planning a food festival, a poetry trail, and lots of exciting festive events which will be included on a Pop Up Hebden that will travel the north of England, telling people that the town is back open for business and money raised at the auction will help fund many of these projects.

The team that made it all happen. Helen Russell, Hannah Nunn, Amy Leader, Jason Elliott, Alison Bartram, Nina Wadcock and Richard Aked, Alison Bartram – photo blu planet photography. Sadly Sarah Mason missed the photo shoot at the end of the evening.
Thanks go to Helen Russell from Mercury Arts who set the ball in motion and the auction would not have possible without Richard Aked of Artome, Sarah Mason of Sarah Mason Photography, Jason Elliott Director at Hebden Bridge Blues Festival and Amy Leader from The Town Hall working in harmony alongside me in the weeks leading up to September 28th.
Helen Bradley from Metropolis Events, Hannah Nunn from Radiance and Nina Wadcock were also fundamental in getting this show on the road and we all made a cracking team.

This really sounds like something from a Tarantino film but I just wanted to write a quick little post on the cleaners that my landlord sent in on Sunday after the floods in Hebden Bridge Friday night!

Market Street flooding – image taken from the internet Ed Chadwick
I know that I was really lucky on Friday night, compared to many of my lovely neighbours on Market Street, but I did still suffer and I suppose I naively thought that being set back from the road with gardens would save the building from being flooded by the water and sewage – I was wrong! You cannot protect anything from the forces of nature and I found that to be true today when ironically meeting with my loss adjuster in the garden at the gallery the sky turned black, the heavens opened and a flash storm meant the road outside the gallery and the path leading up to the front door was once again under an inch of water in 7 minutes! (apparently I have been reliably informed that this equates to 12 inches in an hour). Needless to say with both of us without umbrellas or coats we left in rather a soggy state!

One of three dehumidifiers working their socks off to dry out Heart Gallery
Anyway, I am waffling on so back to the cleaners! My landlord came round on Saturday during the clean up to bring dehumidifiers and let me know that the cleaners were arriving Sunday am. I swear that it just sounded like something from a film script! But send them in he did and when they arrived they worked like troopers to scrub the muck out of the reclaimed timber floor and skirtings in all the rooms and sanitise it so no germs could survive!

Cleaners in the Picture Gallery which sells paintings, prints, photography, glass and ceramics

Cleaners in the back retail room that sells kitchen and homeware including retro telephones

Cleaning underway in the Picture Gallery – can you imagine how much we had to shift to make all this possible?

The cleaners in the back of the building in the office and storerooms – where does the water come from, where does it go? (Think there is a song there somewhere!)
I was so grateful that I also sent them on their ‘aching bone’ way with a bottle of pink fizz which I was told by them would go perfectly with the fish soup they were making for dinner!

Shifting the whole gallery around to clean!

Shifting the whole gallery around to clean!

No where to go!
So watch this space ……. hopefully the floor will once more be back to its former glory!

The floor clean and safe from germs x
So, the cleaners were amazing and I would recommend them to anyone so here is their Facebook Page. Thanks to the landlord for stepping up to the mark in these difficult circumstances, thanks to friends and family who have been there to support me physically and emotionally (I have yet again learned a valuable life lesson about some), and thank you to my wonderful husband who has had flooding to our other business, The Milk Bar, to deal with along with me and my roller coaster of emotions – I love you xXx

Colette Halstead – Glass artist
Colette is a glass artist based in Lancashire who enjoys working mainly with kiln fused glass but she does also use stained glass techniques.

Colette Halstead Glass – Landscape Dish
Colette’s artistic background is as varied and colourful as Blackpool, the town she was born in. She trained professionally as a fine art printmaker and on returning to her home town she worked for fifteen years as one of three artists at ‘Blackpool Illuminations’. She was the only female in a team of forty skilled workers and as artists they we were responsible for translating the designers’ ideas into the brightly lit six mile display.

Colette Halstead Glass – Seedhead Dish
Her desire to work with glass started with a leaded light course in 2003. Glass captivates Colette like no other material; its translucency combined with the muted colours she uses, create beautiful lighting effects. She uses recycled and reclaimed window glass in her work and whilst temperamental it has a particular uniqueness of its own. Old window glass previously used to view landscapes through now hold another landscape between the layers.

Colette Halstead Glass – Landscape coaster set
Colette’s work is always a response to the surroundings and situations that she’s in. She developed her work taking inspiration from both urban and natural landscapes, big skies and open spaces. Leaves taken from the landscape gift her work with the beauty of their organic shapes as she fuses them into the glass to create a simple composition of a tree.

Colette Halstead Glass – Hawthorn Landscape Wall piece
Inspired by nature, Colette’s unique leaf and landscape series capture the essence of the British countryside. Hedgerow and riverbank greenery from the landscapes are introduced into each piece and mark their organic silhouettes in the glass, capturing permanent memories of their once leafy existence.

Colette Halstead Glass – Landscape DIsh with Mill
Above all Colette creates pieces that she hopes give a joy and happiness to those who hold them.

Colette Halstead Glass – Hedge Parsley Rectangular Dish

Live with the art you love …
It’s easy and affordable to buy and collect contemporary art and craft at Heart Gallery with Own Art which lets you spread the cost of your purchase over 10 months with an interest free loan.
Own Art loans allow you to borrow from as little as £100 up to a maximum of £2,000 for the purchase of works of art by living artists.
Own Art loans are available from Heart Gallery for the purchase of contemporary art and craft of any kind, and in any media. That means you can choose more or less anything you want from Heart Gallery from paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture, to glassware, ceramics, jewellery, furniture and textiles.
There is no limit on the number of times you can use Own Art, but we recommend that you don’t apply for more than one loan at a time. This is because each loan application is subject to a credit check, and your application may be declined if you have not yet already established a repayment record for an existing Own Art loan, or if the bank considers that the total amount of credit you are asking for is too high in relation to your income.
The minimum you can borrow is £100 (monthly repayment of £10), but this can be used to cover a group of lower value items whose combined total adds up to £100 or more. This means that at Christmas you can purchase a number of presents for your friends and family interest free so there is no need to use your credit card!
If you are buying something more valuable than £2,000 you can use an Own Art loan as a part payment. Please note that you cannot apply for multiple Own Art loans to cover the costs of a single purchase.
Own Art is available to all UK residents over the age of 18, subject to status. This means that you must be able to meet the following criteria in order to be approved for a loan:
- Over the age of 18
- A permanent UK resident
- Working at least 16 hours a week (employed or self-employed)
If you are not working but are married to or living with a partner who does have a full time job, then you may still apply provided that your partner is happy for their employment details to be included on your application form.
You’ll need to have proof of ID with you in the form of a driver’s licence or utility bill, along with a credit or debit card as proof of signature and it only takes 10 minutes!
Staff in Heart Gallery will take you through the loan application process and once you’ve given all the information we need, you’ll get an instant decision.
Once your application has been approved and you’ve signed the paperwork you can take your purchase(s) away with you – simple as that!
Own Art bank partner Hitachi Capital Consumer finance will send you a welcome letter and the 10 monthly payments will be collected by direct debit from your account starting a few weeks after you’ve made your purchase.

Heart Gallery has been open for five years!
This little post about our birthday celebrations is really late so I must apologise for that … it’s all to do with the ‘time’ thing and how it can play tricks on you! I actually can’t believe it is five years since I first opened the amazing doors of Heart Gallery to you all; it really doesn’t seem that long! In the same respect I thought our party to celebrate five years in business was only last week…..it wasn’t!

Beautiful packages from Lisa Murdoch
Lots of thought and careful planning goes into an exhibition at Heart Gallery and the Birthday one was such a celebration of achievement it had to be right so the contents of these little packages from Lisa were just perfect. Lisa cut, snipped, stitched and styled the bunting then delivered it wrapped like a birthday present and I was over the moon with it.

Happy Birthday Bunting

The weather the week of our party wasn’t that great and the theme for FIVE AND FABULOUS was a Garden Party! However, we kept our spirits up with positive thoughts and were blessed with a dry afternoon and evening in the end so we were all happy bunnies….the Makepiece models for the fashion show were happy little sheep!

Sabine Little - Glass Artist and Jeweller
Sabine is a professional lampworker and glass bead maker living near Sheffield, on the edge of the Peak District.

Necklace from Wordsmith range
As an artist she is interested in stories, and the words that we choose to tell these stories. Words hold power over almost everybody, evoking dreams, memories and aspirations. Sabine has a love for words – for the strength they can give, for the power inherent in them.

Heart necklace
The Wordsmith range features lines and excerpts from some of the best-known authors in history. Love poems, inspirational words, playfulness, they are all accounted for reminding us of who or what we might be, or indeed, who and what we already are.

Ring from the Wordsmith range
Whether a classy, simple design with words on a plain and/or etched background, or a more elaborate piece of jewellery with polka dots, vintage roses or curling vines, the words are always the centre of attention.

Heart necklace from the Wordsmith range
This range lends itself well to personalisation – University or company mottos, tailored gifts, love tokens can all be created to suit.

Vintage inspired glass heart buttons
Sabine works with both soft and borosilicate glass, combining lampwork and cold working techniques to create a variety of jewellery and sculptural pieces and her work has been published and exhibited through a number of outlets both in the UK and abroad.
