Rachel is a local designer/maker who first started making jewellery in 2008 whilst on maternity leave with her second child. Describing herself previously as being an ‘armchair creative’ until then she had relished all aspects of design from architecture, art, ceramics, home decoration, jewellery…avidly watching programmes and reading about it, but not taking the plunge.
Her idea to buy some beads from ebay and make herself some jewellery exploded into a passion for creating jewellery her way, even coming up with some designs that weren’t something she would personally wear but loved and felt compelled to make! Lots of positive feedback from friends and family lead her to decide this could be the creative outlet she had been looking for.
Looking back, it seemed destined to be, because as a child, Rachel spent hours playing with beautiful old beads and broken jewellery from her Grandmother’s jewellery box, collecting gemstones and treasures, and only ever wanting ‘proper’ sterling silver jewellery.
Rachel’s love of Art Deco design, Hollywood Glamour, quirky yet uncluttered design has lead to a unique style ideal for showing off the gorgeous gemstones and pearls she hand picks.
Heart Gallery was the first stockist of Rachel’s initial designs, having had numerous collections since, and will be including a selection of designs from Rachel’s own Folklore Collection in the latest exhibition.
This latest collection has been inspired by half remembered fairy tales of wolves, elves and magical folk, entwined with traditional tales from other countries and a love of the time-honoured language used such as ‘Happily Ever After’. Using precious and semi-precious stones such as rubies, iolite, jasper and fluorite, Rachel’s unique eye for colour and form guarantees delicate, wearable jewellery to treasure and pass down like an old tale.
With no formal design or jewellery training, Rachel is further developing her craft and has now embarked on silver-smith training. She will be incorporating work-bench designs including rings and stone setting into her collections later this year so watch out for her new collections at Heart Gallery at Christmas.
