Katie is a designer maker who specialises in Ceramics and Paper. Katie did a BA (Hons) degree in Design Crafts at De Montfort University in Leicester. In the first two years she was encouraged to experiment with a wide range of materials: textiles, ceramics, jewellery, metal, wood and glass (to name just a few); then in the third year she had to specialise, and she chose ceramics and paper.
It was that final year that really fuelled her passion for making, and she produced a range of paper and porcelain jugs and cups; if she had chosen just ceramics Katie is not sure she would have ever thought to combine the two different materials. Since graduating she has set up her own workshop alongside being an Artist in Residence at DMU.
Katie produces hand-painted porcelain jugs, cups, cake stands and brooches. Each piece is essentially a canvas for decoration and collage. Katie’s inspiration comes from nostalgic objects and vintage textiles; a collection of old labels and tickets, or it could be a pattern she sees on a piece of fabric. Katie has a vast amount of vintage tins, cups and saucers, letters, and embroidered fabrics, many of which are personal to her as they once belonged to her grandmother.
Katie’s collection uses elements from a different era alongside her own drawings, text and collage. Katie was always drawing, painting and making things from a very young age, a lot of the time with her grandmother who took care of her during the school holidays. This love of drawing carried on right through her education and she regularly entered design competitions; art was most definitely her favourite subject and she studied it for both GCSE and A-level. Two of Katie’s designs were recently chosen for greetings cards.
Katie is particularly drawn to the notion of ‘high tea’ with its elaborate table settings and handcrafted ceramics. Katie focuses on pattern and detail using mixed media to collage and juxtaposes the found and made. The pieces represent ‘one off’ pieces that explore nostalgic themes, scale and hand painted decoration.
Katie’s stunning work is popular in Heart Gallery and she can work to commission. Creating something bespoke for our customers using their own photographs is something Katie really enjoys and we love seeing the customer’s face when they unwrap their personalised piece in Heart Gallery for the first time – their joy is infectious and makes us all cheerful!
