- Clare is a ceramic artist with a fascination for the natural world. This passion has remained a strong theme throughout her work. It always has the innate ability to bring her joy, ground her and make her aware that we are more than a sum of our parts.
Clare works with surface; breaking up 2D space, abstracting natural forms and fauna to produce images that strive to capture a twisted tendril or fragile leaf. The pieces are wall mounted ceramic sculptures, or tiles for architectural or interior settings. The techniques of printmaking are used to illustrate the designs, creating a feeling of layers and elements collaged together.
Clare’s tiles are hand decorated with wax resist, paper stencil and limited edition screen print and can be easily incorporated with shop bought tiles. Each tile is fired to 1080° which makes them robust and waterproof. Or why not mix a few with standard tiles or buy them backed with cork to use as Coasters! Clare welcomes Interior commissions with a minimum order of £200.
Clare loves the medium of clay, its impressionability, sensuality and earthy quality, opening a fresh bag of porcelain never ceases to excite her. Clare’s sculptural pieces are hand built, using the process of press mould porcelain. She makes casts from found objects and pebbles. Their small size is based around the physicality of the hand, that lovely feeling of holding a tactile object in the palm of your hand.
After completing undergraduate studies at The Glasgow School of Art, Clare developed her knowledge and specialism, completing an MA at Howard Gardens in Cardiff. She studied at the Baltimore Institute in Maryland and worked with potters in Sanoma California. Clare supplies galleries throughout the uk and lives and works in Devon, where she is a member of The Devon Guild of Craftsmen.
Clare’s extremely tactile hearts and pebbles are very popular at Heart Gallery and make an ideal little pressie for that someone special in your life.
