Margo trained in textile design at Chelsea College of Art and Design and then followed this with a postgraduate degree at The Royal College of Art, graduating in 2001. On graduating Margo initially worked as a woven textile designer for industrial mills. It was during this time she united her innovative hand-woven constructions with industrial machinery to create the unique 3-dimensional fabrics that were to become the trademark of the Margo Selby Brand.
Margo is a weaver and colourist, the geometric and organised patterns used in her designs are inspired by the repetitive, structured and disciplined weaving process.
Margo’s fabrics have originally been created on a hand loom and are often inspired by the design process where her patterns are led by the development of the weave construction.
Connecting with the materials in a hands on way whilst making on a hand-loom enables a greater understanding of the construction and behaviour of the materials and their impact on the final fabric as they are crafted together in different fibre and construction combinations.
Her designs lend themselves beautifully to many different product styles that are available in sumptuous colour and texture combinations. Her patterns are a dynamic juxtaposition of image and colour and portray Margo’s love of repetitive geometric pattern, striking colour and 3-dimensional texture.
They combine Margo Selbys expert use of colour and understanding of pattern to create unique pieces of artwork as well as luxurious fashion accessories.
Margo’s first collection was launched in 2003 with the help of a development award from The Crafts Council. Margo now works from her design studio in the creative seaside town of Whitstable.
The trademark patterned and textured products are fast becoming coveted contemporary classics and Margo is now established as a pioneer within contemporary textiles.
Heart Gallery is proud to showcase Margo’s collection of purses, make-up bags, larger bags and scarves so do bob in soon to see a selection of her colourful creations.
