Kate Hamilton-Hunter and her trusty ever-expanding team design and create jewellery from upcycled biscuit, shortbread, sweet and toffee tins.
Once they deconstruct the tins, they cut out hearts, birds, leaves and butterflies from the flat sheet, sand all the edges, file the corners, drill and dome the flat pieces and then mount the pendants onto sterling silver sometimes embellishing with with Swarovski crystals and pearls. Each piece is carefully chosen to make the most of the design on the tin and to use the material as effectively and efficiently as possible.
Kate’s studio is on the North Wales coast, with the waves crashing behind the studio on stormy days! Over the 10 years of developing and growing the business Kate has moved from her kitchen table to various locations. Here at Heart Gallery we feel that we have been on this journey with Kate having stocked her work for 8 years now.
In 2013 Kate moved once more and soon realised she had found the perfect studio finally and she is now happy and settled in a light industrial unit by the beach! The building was built for Kate and her team so they requested skylights in the roof and the daylight has made a big difference to the feel of the studio and offices.
Kate doesn’t look to other jewellers for inspiration but she does, in her own words, “love love love the work of environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy, collage artist Sarah Lugg and Welsh artist Eleri Mills”, among many others! Kate is inspired mostly by her natural surroundings in North Wales.
Kate takes photos on her phone every day for Instagram, which keeps her creative brain ticking over! She then transforms her iPhone photos on Instagram into retro snippets and is building a virtual sketchbook of daily moments of inspiration. There is a world of beauty all around us, we just have to look with new eyes to see it and Kate sees her job as using her world of inspiration and insight to create beautiful things that connect us to each other through beautiful design.
Her favourite recent collection was the Woodland Trust Collection as she took the shapes of leaves, butterfly wings and seeds for this collection. Mother Nature must be the greatest inspiration for designers the world over!
Kate and her team have just finished samples for Valentine’s Day 2015 and she is now looking to Spring/Summer designs to reflect those hazy days of summer! Quite tricky when it’s raining and cloudy outside!
I recently asked Kate to describe her work in only 5 words and this is what she said, “Delicate, Feminine, Unique, Different, Creative”. We feel this sums up all the ranges we have ever stocked by Kate perfectly and know that you will love the new Christmas collections as much as the Pretty floral pieces we will continue to showcase.
Kate designs all of the jewellery and trains her team of talented jewellery-makers in her own unique processes used to create her signature style of contemporary jewellery…..and here at Heart Gallery we love their collections and know that you do too. Call in to see her lovely new Christmas collection soon x
