Charlotte is a Bournemouth based ceramicist who creates handmade sculptures and tableware inspired by animals within domestic settings.
Her anthropomorphic, whimsical budgie sculptures are both endearing and nostalgic, whilst her range of quirky tableware is a tribute to English eccentric kitsch.
Charlotte uses a combination of ceramic surface decoration techniques from hand printed to digital decals to collage on the surface of her pieces to create witty and satirical scenes. These have then inspired her latest series of budgie sculptures in stoneware with Engobe decoration, which bring the characters featured in her illustrations to life…long admired by us all at Heart Gallery.
Her inspiration comes from vintage kitsch, seaside postcard humour and observing animals with each other and their owners. Charlotte’s love of budgies started when she created ‘Brian’, an Elvis loving budgie with a quiff.
Since then she has created a whole range of characters in their own settings with a range of hair styles, facial hair and jumpers with her latest work depicting them in 3 dimensions.
At the time of Brian’s conception Charlotte was working as a care worker visiting the elderly at home, this quickly began to influence her creations as she began to look at 1950/60/70’s interiors and furniture, which soon were featured in her scenes.
Charlotte’s love of print making and sculpture has led her to develop a range of work that concentrates on form as well as illustrative and textured surfaces. Both are influenced by her degree in Contemporary Crafts, where she studied both textiles and ceramics and developed a love for surface design and sculpture.
Charlotte’s budgies have now flown into Heart Gallery but we don’t think they will perch here for long as you will come along and give them a forever home I’m sure. x
