Rachel is now based in Edinburgh and specialises mostly in making kiln-formed glass which essentially requires great planning and preparation of the glass, whether that is with moulds or applying enamels, prior to placing it in the kiln and programming it to heat and cool the glass in a certain way.

It can sometimes take weeks to prepare a firing and unexpected things can occur, but it is this troubleshooting element that Rachel relishes and keeps her engaged with the material.

Rachel  is inspired by the intricate details of life and her work is essentially a representational comment on the world surrounding us as well as a constant challenge to her technical abilities.

Rachel uses traditional techniques such as lost wax casting as well as screen-printing with fired enamels. These are combined with innovative water-jet cutting technology to create intricate shapes from the glass.

Rachel’s unique sculpture varies from precision cut silhouettes of creatures adorned with varied designs in enamel colours to highly detailed cast glass, such as her recent bee honeycomb series.

Rachel’s work ranges from small items of sculpture or jewellery to unique one-off pieces for exhibition or installation.  She describes herself as an artist that doesn’t take things too seriously and often incorporates elements of fun into her work mainly for her own amusement, but hopefully entertaining others too.
