Toby makes unique, sculptural jewellery inspired by the natural world. His work has been influenced by his early years growing up on a farm in rural West Wales. His family didn’t have a television in the house until he was 15, so his formative years were mainly spent outside with his brothers, exploring and playing in the great outdoors. Toby loved learning about the natural world (and still does), and absorbed names of plants, trees, animals and insects.
Toby’s main collection is called Arthropod, named after the large group of animals containing crustaceans and insects. These creatures number over a million species, and contain over 80% of all animal life. His jewellery celebrates these fantastic creatures, imagining them evolving onto and around the human body.
By using traditional silversmithing techniques Toby forges silver over steel stakes into three-dimensional forms. These are often articulated, and combined with handmade hinges and catches, to create lively, humorous pieces of wearable sculpture. He adds gold details to some pieces, and uses resins with natural pigments such as cochineal and indigo to provide colour on others.
Toby studied Design:Craft at Staffordshire University, graduating in 2002, and he has exhibited at various locations across the UK and abroad including Art in Action and Velvet Da Vinci in San Francisco.
Toby is new to Heart Gallery for our Autumn/Winter season 2015 and is one of our local jewellers. His work is arriving with us at the end of October and we are proud to say we will be one of his regular stockists for his collections.
Recently, Toby has visited the big smoke for his Hothouse 6 interview at Craft Council HQ and we are keeping our fingers crossed he receives good news next month. In the meantime be sure to bob in to Heart Gallery and see his new collection for us including this amazing statement piece titled ‘I think I’ll hang around here for a bit’ which is silver with Eco Resin and has an 18ct gold sting!
