Meet the Maker – Lucy Burley

Lucy Burley - Ceramicist

Lucy Burley – Ceramicist

Following a career in television production, Lucy began making pots in 1992. After graduating she set up in a shared studio in Battersea and began to make and sell work at open studios and local craft fairs when Lucy was also a member of London Potters.  In 2000 Lucy moved to Farnham and her studio is still in Hampshire today

Lucy’s work is thrown on the wheel using white earthenware clay (and sometimes stoneware, with crystalline glazes). Lucy is constantly aiming for harmony of form and colour and enjoys experimenting with a base glaze of her own formulation to make a wide spectrum of colours – mostly subtle and fairly muted, but some more vivid.

Lucy makes functional and decorative vessels: bottles, vases, bowls and jugs partly inspired by the still-life paintings of Giorgio Morandi: She wants her vessels to have the same sense of being in family groups, related but not identical. Lucy strives for the simplicity and quiet conveyed by his pictures of groups of bottles and other vessels.

The inspiration for Lucy’s colour palette comes from nature: flowers, fruit, the landscape.  The colours she mixes are those of the sky, seashore, precious stones, plants and trees depending on the season.

Lucy will also use shades of dove grey, chargoal and ivory which we will showcase at Heart Gallery in 2015.

As Morandi said, “What interests me most is expressing what is in nature, in the visible world”.
