Acrylic workshop with local artist Julia Ogden

Well my friends, September is nearly upon us as we count down to our next exhibition UNDER THE SAME SKY.

After a lovely breakfast meeting with Julia earlier this week, and a sneaky peek at some of the finished paintings, I wanted to share some of the news with you here and tell you about her painting workshop at Heart Gallery.

Julia’s walks to Gibson Mill, Heptonstall and Stoodley Pike looking across the valley or hills have informed the colours of her paintings; watching the seasons change under the same sky!

Back in her small but perfectly formed studio Julia starts work on creating a painting from something that has inspired her on one of her walks.

The changing skies show a new side to our valley’s character and Julia captures this in acrylic to give us insights of her lovely day. Julia doesn’t  really know why her colours turn out like this but we love her paintings and know you will too.

Northern Skies - Passing Through ticket
You can be inspired by Julia too on Monday 10th October if you attend her acrylic painting workshop at Heart Gallery from 1pm – 4pm.  Tickets for NORTHERN SKIES – PASSING THROUGH are £28 and available from Heart Gallery. Spaces are limited to ensure lots of one to one teaching so please do call in to buy yours soon so you are not disappointed.

Well doesn’t time fly my friends, August already! Despite the fact that this month’s weather hasn’t really started off too well in the valley we are getting some lovely new visitors into Heart Gallery enjoying our new space.

In between looking after our lovely customers we are busy getting ready for our September exhibition with local artist Julia Ogden, UNDER THE SAME SKY, which launches 8th September at 5pm.

The changing skies show a new side to our valley’s character and the landscape welcomes visitors to Yorkshire. Wherever you are you are always under the same ever-changing yet faithful sky. UNDER THE SAME SKY will also showcase complimenting work by ceramicists, sculptors, printmakers and jewellers.

Sarah Harris is back with us with some lovely new local work such as this piece at Top Withens.

You will adore Ria’s fabulous jewellery collection she is sending us from sunny Brighton and I booked Katie Pruden’s sculptural ceramics in when visiting BCTF earlier this year … you will not be disappointed my friends.

We have a Meet The Maker event with Julia on 19th September from 1-4pm. This is a rare opportunity to see Julia at work in Heart Gallery. Pop in to see her working on something new and exciting as she shares her inspirations and techniques with us over a cup of tea.

Stewart Morton-Collins has made us some brand new lasercut wood pieces which I know you all adore and Kirsti Brown is back with us with new vessels.

Another new jeweller to Heart Gallery is Emily Kidson and we know you will fall in love with her contemporary mixed media collection.

Watermark Calderdale is a campaign to build a resilience fund for our towns for future flooding. Their aim is to build a pot of money that can be accessed by businesses & households immediately when future floods hit (because they will – it may be 5 years time, it may be next week!).

Our Shop Was flooded - poster A4.pdf

Watermark is a not-for-profit campaign and is a joint venture between Totally Locally its founder Chris Sands and Community Foundation for Calderdale.

Walking in to Heart Gallery when the flood waters finally subsided was heartbreaking

Walking in to Heart Gallery when the flood waters finally subsided was heartbreaking

As you already know we have seen first hand how invasive flood water is to homes and businesses and moving forward from the Boxing Day floods of 2015 we will have no insurance cover when it happens again. This is why Heart Gallery is delighted to be working with local artists to produce EXCLUSIVE TO HEART GALLERY products to raise much needed pennies for this great campaign.

Hebden Spirit bottle
We have worked with Andy Poplar now for 5 years and it just felt right to ask him to produce a piece for us that celebrated everything that was so great about our community in the days following the floods, something that can’t be broken – the Hebden Spirit! This bottle is now available from us in a 250ml size with £10 from the sale going into the Watermark Fund and a 500ml size with £15 from the sale going to into the Watermark Fund.

postcard set

Another of our much loved local artists is painter and printmaker Julia Ogden (she was a Heart Gallery Princess for over 5 years before taking the leap into her own creative practice!). Julia has created a set of 6 postcards celebrating the positive within our community. And let’s face it right now, who doesn’t want to send a bit of kindness through the post, I know I am not alone in knowing we really do need this in our lives now more than ever before! These retail for £12 and £5 will be popped into the fund for every set sold at Heart Gallery.

Isobel Cortese Strong Tea

Isobel is another of our local artists that you love since she started her new business venture with us over 2 years ago so it felt right to ask her to come up with a Watermark product too. I know alcohol kept me going the early part of this year but so did tea so this everlasting terrarium is perfect! It retails at £80 and £20 is going into the Watermark Fund from every sale in Heart Gallery.

The Mighty Calder Valley - Pippa

Our fourth product is another beauty! Our very own Pippa Dyrlaga, Heart Gallery Princess, (also known as Bear Follows Cat) has produced an amazing paper cut for us. We currently have the framed original on our wall retailing at £340 and £40 will be donated to the Watermark Fund when it sells (not sure how long this will hang around for though!). Fear not though because Pippa has also produced a limited print run of 100 in the reverse colourway you see here on the original paper cut and they are retailing for £35 with £10 from every one sold in Heart Gallery going into the Watermark Fund.

welcome to Heart Gallery small for web

It’s important to stress that all our artists making Watermark products for us are being paid as normal for their hours and their materials and it is Heart Gallery that is donating its commission from the sale into the Watermark Fund. We hope to see you in Heart Gallery soon x

The ‘RIP OUT’ team

The thought of having Heart Gallery ‘ripped out’ is really making me ill and perhaps this team should not really be called the ‘Rip Out’ team but anyway here’s the first update I promised you my friends.

Meet Len and his boys!

These guys turned up this last week a month after Heart Gallery was filled with over 3ft of dirty, sewage flood waters when our lovely town was devastated by the awful Boxing Day floods that hit Calderdale. We had spent the last 4 weeks emptying all our rooms to clear the way for them so we were actually quite glad to see them believe it or not!

So sad to see our reclaimed wooden floor gone!

Our lovely reclaimed wooden floor had to be removed throughout as their first job and the saddest bit about this was knowing a wooden floor could not be put back down if we wanted to be more flood resilient moving forward.

main gallery
The Picture Gallery looked very odd without its floor but then pretty strange once the boys started to knock off the plaster all the way round as well….just the lovely hand printed banner by our local artist Julia Ogden was a reminder of how it was when we locked up at 4pm on Christmas Eve!

picture gallery 2
The artist Studio where Heather Wilson had her studio for over 8 years looked grim too with all the meters and pipes exposed and the floor joists in a sorry, soggy state.

Heather's studio
A few skips later and the boys leave Heart Gallery so they can hand over to the ‘Drying Team’ who will hopefully arrive on Monday. If you think this pile of wood looks big you should have seen it before!

pile of wood
Just waiting now for Calderdale Council to collect this so at least it will look a little tidier in our garden!

The worst news we have had this week is the discovery of a structural problem that may or may not be connected to the Boxing Day floods and we won’t find out about this until we’ve taken some advice this next week so please keep your fingers crossed my friends that it is something that can be easily rectified thank you.

LOGO for PRPlease look out for our next update and if you are wanting to help in anyway then we are part of this Crowdfunder that has been set up to help us and many other small businesses in Calderdale … lots of those are in Hebden Bridge too. Hebden Bridge does rely on the visitor economy and so our town needs to be back on its feet soon and although I know I will more than likely be one of the last small businesses to open this year I also know you will all be back to support me so thank you from the bottom of my heart x

Our very lovely Kate Lycett, whom you have all come to know and love, has produced a new body of work this year themed around North Yorkshire which debuted at Chantry House Gallery  October 2013. The originals sold but we are delighted to now have the ltd edition prints for you.

Rainy Day in New York - Angela Smyth

A Rainy Day in New York – Angela Smyth

Making her debut with us is the very talented Angela Smyth … we are so excited to be showing her latest original paintings (above) after long admiring her previous work on ‘naughty’ ladies for quite some time (below) … you may recognise this!

Angela is a painter of fun, life-affirming, poignant, often quirky & sometimes downright rude pictures. She is a lover of people & animals, watcher from cafe windows, interpreter of the every day, fan of the gentle smile and the knowing wink and an imaginer of things that aren’t usually there, but quite possibly could be! You will adore her new work as much as we do.

image 2See you Sunday then, 12 o’clock sharp if you want to be one of the first to see our new collections.
