Meet The Maker – Amy Wilkinson

Amy Wilkinson

Having graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2004, Amy designs and makes jewellery in Studio One in The Manchester Craft & Design Centre.

BRNL4Amy hand-makes jewellery using precious metals in which she draws linear and simplified shapes that also create interesting voids of space.

BRNL1Inspired by the baroque style, she has incorporated the lavish leaf like curves and curls often found in sculptures and bordering frames.

Baroque earrings3The layers and asymmetrical shapes give the pieces volume whilst also sitting flat and elegant when worn.

BRNL3Amy also uses her metalwork skills working as an armature maker at Mackinnon & Saunders making stop-motion animation puppets – seen in films such as The Corpse Bride, Fantastic Mr Fox, Frankenweenie and children’s programs, Postman Pat, Twirlywoos, Toby’s Travelling Circus and Strange Hill High. The armature is a steel, skeleton structure designed and made to give the puppet maximum movement for the animator.

baroquelargenl2Heart Gallery is proud to be stocking Amy’s work once more after working with her a few years ago; it’s great to see her collection growing.

Meet The Maker – Jane Booth

JAne Booth

Jane makes unique, functional ceramics in delicious colours. Her pots have a vintage feel but are made in contemporary shapes. She strives to make work which is gorgeous to look at but also suitable for everyday use.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Pieces are hand thrown and decorated with coloured slips, glaze and ceramic transfers. No two pieces are exactly alike.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Jane uses terracotta clay as she likes the warmth and richness of the colour and the effect that is created when the clay breaks through the softly coloured slips.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Jane is inspired by the colours and patterns of some of her favourite things – from vintage fabrics and ceramics and 18th century paintings, to ice cream and macarons.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Jane’s unique Story range is inspired by her love of illustrated children’s literature and invokes nostalgia and happy memories through evocative storytelling.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Story pieces feature vintage illustrations and text. Sometimes Jane uses quotations from the actual books and sometimes she will match illustrations and quotations (or her own words) that she feels simply fit well together.

Heart Gallery quite often has small batches of Jane’s work throughout the year and we have a small collection with us at the moment which is proving really popular with references to Wuthering Heights and the Brontes.

Meet The Maker – Hannah Bedford

Hannah Bedford

Hannah’s jewellery designs explore texture and form using the traditional process of granulation.

HB-2013-3-11Working in precious metals, Hannah creates a range of women’s jewellery, from intricate necklaces to bespoke engagement and wedding rings.

HB-2013-3-14Collections are inspired by organic growth patterns in the natural world. Hannah uses granulation to create raised, textured surfaces that entwine each piece.

HB-2014-1-8Fine granulation encaptures precious stones and interlaces between surfaces, linking bangles and weaving across rings.

Froth Ring setThe work is often led by these technical explorations, using them to play with scale, form and contrasting precious metals to create aesthetically beautiful forms.

HB-2016-1-35Each piece is carefully handcrafted in her London studio, and her jewellery collections are exhibited nationally.

HB-2013-3-12Hannah also works with clients, to create beautiful bespoke commissions so do ask us about this service.

Meet The Maker – Nick Hubbard

Nick Hubbard WorkshopThose not familiar with Nick’s work will be amazed by the detail and intricacy of his unique designs; a figurative collection of oxidized silver pieces and charms bearing words and messages.

BB085 hare of the dog cufflinksMany pieces have moving parts and small doors that open to reveal fine gold detail. Nick’s jewellery has become extremely collectable and can be easily identified as the original article by a small engraving of a ‘brick and bean’ on each piece of jewellery; a play on words of Nick and his wife’s name ‘Nick and Jean’.

NH281 Hare with bow, necklace copyIn 1976 Nick proposed to Jean and after saying that she was ‘quite fond of him’ they were married. Two years later Nick and Jean set up their own business and Nick began his workshop from a small room in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter. Nick spent many years making tiny, moving and opening models and charms for the jewellery trade.

NH168 Leap of faith, broochNick and Jean had two daughters, Philippa and Elizabeth, in the late seventies and early eighties and Nick set up a workshop at home so that he could spend more time with his family. He divided his time working from home and from his studio in the Jewellery Quarter.

Eventually continuing his love of miniaturization Nick went on to produce his first jewellery collection in 1996 and the miniature world of Nick Hubbard Jewellery began!

BB037 running hare brooch

Sadly on Saturday the 17th of August 2013 Nick passed away suddenly but peacefully, in his sleep, beside his angel, his darling wife Jean.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Nick touched the lives of everyone he met; a tall man, a quiet man – a gentle man with a real interest in everything and everyone around him.  He was a brick – solid and dependable, he was the very foundations of his loving family and as described by his daughters – ‘he was perfect’.

NH282 Precious, heart in a box, necklace copyNick loved his workshop and all that happened within its four walls, he was at his bench from early morning to early evening and when he was at home he could be found at his desk making cards for friends and family.  Nick had a passion to create, to design and to make and he encouraged this in all of his team.

NH205 golden heart earringsNick left sketchbooks full of designs and ideas and the Brick and Bean team want the world to see them! Through these sketchbooks and through his family there is an insight into the magical world in which Nick lived. Here at Heart Gallery we are so proud to be showcasing his latest collection based on Alice in Wonderland that the workshop have brought to life from Nick’s books.

NH262 Curiouser and Curiouser, bracelet

Today the Brick and Bean team work from their studio which is an old bakery overlooking the Staffordshire countryside. It remains a small family business run by Jean and her daughters, Philippa and Liz, along with an extended family of dedicated jewellery graduates Mandy, Katie, Jenni and Helen who ensure that every piece is made to the highest quality and posted off on time.

NH283 Curiouser and Curiouser, locket ring copyNick never knew just how exceptionally wonderful he was, in one of his last emails he wrote ‘I am not making myself a rich man but a happy one!’ … what more can be said? x

UNDER THE SAME SKY

Well doesn’t time fly my friends, August already! Despite the fact that this month’s weather hasn’t really started off too well in the valley we are getting some lovely new visitors into Heart Gallery enjoying our new space.

IMG_4501
In between looking after our lovely customers we are busy getting ready for our September exhibition with local artist Julia Ogden, UNDER THE SAME SKY, which launches 8th September at 5pm.

Under the Same Sky front for web

Julia’s walks to Gibson Mill, Heptonstall and Stoodley Pike looking across the valley or hills have informed the colours of her paintings; watching the seasons change under the same sky!

Meet The Maker – Sarah Lawrence

Sarah Lawrence

Sarah confesses to being a bit of a neat freak and this latest collection from her takes inspiration from that impulse to organise things! She enjoys sketching up ideas on graph paper as she loves the neat lines and squares.

SL3 £75
Sarah had great fun arranging these small rectangular pieces of tube and found it a refreshing change to the jewellery she has been making in the last few years. The pieces have an art deco feel to them and this inspiration gives her lots of scope to develop the collection further.

SL13 £40
After two decades of making jewellery, teaching jewellery and selling jewellery Sarah admits that her favourite place is to be tucked away in her studio at her work bench where she considers herself extremely lucky to be doing something she loves.

SL7 £40
This stunning new collection is handmade entirely in sterling silver with every rectangular section of tube being individually positioned and soldered into place.

SL10 £37

The pieces are very wearable and range from a tiny cluster of two or three rectangular tube sections to a more complex arrangement of 30 or more.

SL12 £40

This variety with the designs allows Sarah to make some very affordable smaller pieces as well as the more detailed and expensive ones so they can fit any budget and makes them ideal as a gift or treat for yourself.

SL1 £40

We are the only Gallery Sarah has carefully chosen for this art deco inspired new jewellery collection and it’s proving a popular choice with many of our customers.

Meet The Maker – Emma Louise Wilson

Emma Louise WilsonThe fragile qualities of porcelain enable Emma to work in detail, creating textures and something unique. Each handmade piece goes through many stages and can be fired up to three times.

DSCF2274

Emma’s porcelain pieces, e.g. bowls, dishes, brooches, plaques, often incorporate her surface pattern designs.

Delicate Porcelain Small Bowls

Emma’s inspiration can come from many different areas, often from Nature or simple daily observations that can inspire her to incorporate these into her pieces.

Delicate Porcelain Spoons

A friend of Heart Gallery sent us a gorgeous bowl with a heart on after the Boxing Day floods 2015 made by Emma so we were delighted when she agreed to produce a small range of these bowls to celebrate re-opening in June 2015.

Meet The Maker – Gillian Lee Smith

Gillian Lee Smith

Gillian’s work is all about connection between people, the communities they live in, and their impact and relationship to the landscape in what they reside.

Harbour house - oil on board - 20x30cms March 2016

The people she portrays have a sense of history, perhaps a melancholic way of reminding us of what has long since passed, what we have lost in many ways.

21 31

Emotion and memory etched on their faces. This is where we came from. Generations of families living through uncertain times, and bound together by community, loss and hope.

6 31

Gillian’s landscapes show the marks of these communities on the land on which they work and the space between land and sea. Harbour houses, buildings that are in sympathy with the landscape in which they are placed.

5 20 oil on board 2

Layers of muted colours and textured paint are built up in the same way that memories are accumulated over our lifetime and from the generations before. A history, half remembered, stories told and adapted over time.

5 20 oil on board 3

Gillian often feels that rather than painting or drawing on a surface, she is excavating an image, a person or a place, revealing something that has been there for a long, long time.

7 31

Her process is one of applying layers and scraping or erasing away, leaving remnants that are built up and removed over and over until the final image comes together.

5 20 oil on board 4

Here at Heart Gallery we were really proud to re-open with a lovely collection of Gillian’s new oil paintings so if you haven’t seen her work since our last exhibition with her, WE ALL CAST SHADOWS, then now is the time to visit as her work is only with us until the end of August.

Meet The Maker – Graham Blakelock

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

At the beginning of the year we spent a lot of time researching interiors, colour schemes and best practices and trying to find a compromise with our insurance company etc at the same time trying to remain creative and hunt out new designer/makers to re-open with that you haven’t seen before – after all the cleaning up of course which took up all of January and part of February!

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

In amongst we came across Graham …. and what a lovely discovery that turned out to be when he came to see us down at The Egg Factory, our temporary office!

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Graham has a fondness for trees, architecture, Yorkshire and chocolate (don’t we all!). His other interests involve design and graphics and he is a compulsive DIYer.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Graham hasn’t made us anything out of chocolate yet, although we would willingly try those creations out any day of the week! However, he has recently rediscovered his love of working with porcelain and this is his second time around working with clay.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Graham feels that this is the perfect medium for him at this time in his life, enabling him to create/realise his ideas as close as possible to the images that drop into his head.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Graham’s miniature hills are exquisite. We love them here at Heart Gallery and we are so pleased he is producing a small range for us with sheep, trees, houses and mills – all the things we love too about where we live and work!

6.Rachel Grant New Beginnings 40x50cm

She lives and works from an old terraced house without a right angle in sight and it’s this love of history, time-worn surfaces and the consistency of the natural world that surrounds them that inspire and inform her work.

3. Rachel Grant Moments from Spring 40x50cmAlthough the subject matter and medium may vary, Rachel’s aim is to convey a sense of peace and harmony; capturing quiet, still moments in an otherwise chaotic world.

8. Rachel Grant Silverlinings 40x40cm Our world in the Calderdale valley has been rather chaotic since the Boxing Day floods of 2015 so we gravitated towards Rachel’s calm and peaceful work and really hope you like what you see!
