It’s here! We are on the home stretch!

This has felt such a long time coming my friends but in my head I always had the Arts Festival to aim for. Even though it was a date I didn’t want to write down, advertise or put on social media it was the date that has kept me sane since Boxing Day. Why? Because as a proud supporter I have not missed one yet since opening Heart Gallery on Market Street nearly 10 years ago. Check out this year’s programme here Hebden Bridge Arts Festival.

Our West End Boys handed the building back to us on Friday 10th June all stitched back together again and we are so chuffed. We do still have drying out issues which are related to our burst water pipe you probably read about (Water Woes) but this does not reflect on West End Joiners & Builders. These guys have been so amazing to deal with, I am so glad I fought the Insurance Company for local contractors. They have been professional, thorough, shown empathy to the situation, found solutions to access problems efficiently, project managed their team seamlessly and communicated at all times so I never felt that it wasn’t my project. Paul, Michael and Bob were so disappointed to have to hand over with some decorating still to do once we are completely dry but they reassured me they would be monitoring it for me in their own time – job well done lads, party at mine soon!

cleaning the floor
After they sent the cleaners in to reveal and clean the new floor I could call local firm Howarths to collect all our salvaged and renovated furniture (more on this later this week) and it was time to start unpacking everything.

unpackingWithout giving too much away here are some photos of some of the details we love about the new Heart Gallery and you will have to wait until the 24th June to see them in the flesh my friends:

Remember the date for your diary my friends and start saving your pennies … we will re-open FRIDAY 24TH JUNE AT 10.30 AM

Two pendants in silver with oxidised mild steel and 18ct gold

His work is inspired by two main strands of influence, which are abstract symbols such as road markings, coupled with his interest in the reactions of 3D media to applied processes.

Rings

Mark utilises these material reactions in combination with abstract symbols and  pattern to create jewellery and other forms of design work which are sophisticated, refined and well made.

Mark’s jewellery has now arrived with us in Hebden Bridge and we are looking forward to some of his small ceramic pots appearing soon which are lathe turned. These two elements complement each other creating an effective display.

Meet The Maker – Toby Cotterill

Toby Cotterill - Jeweller

Toby Cotterill – Jeweller

Toby makes unique, sculptural jewellery inspired by the natural world. His work has been influenced by his early years growing up on a farm in rural West Wales. His family didn’t have a television in the house until he was 15, so his formative years were mainly spent outside with his brothers, exploring and playing in the great outdoors. Toby loved learning about the natural world (and still does), and absorbed names of plants, trees, animals and insects.

Toby’s main collection is called Arthropod, named after the large group of animals containing crustaceans and insects. These creatures number over a million species, and contain over 80% of all animal life. His jewellery celebrates these fantastic creatures, imagining them evolving onto and around the human body.

Articulated bracelet

By using traditional silversmithing techniques Toby forges silver over steel stakes into three-dimensional forms. These are often articulated, and combined with handmade hinges and catches, to create lively, humorous pieces of wearable sculpture. He adds gold details to some pieces, and uses resins with natural pigments such as cochineal and indigo to provide colour on others.

Blurry hearts

Kate’s textile design background is always present in the way that she paints and interprets what is around her. She sees patterns in everything; the hills adorned with houses and washing lines, rows of flower pots and stripes of brightly painted drain pipes. Lines of gold thread trace lines through the landscape, and gold leaf changes the surface of her pictures with the changing light of day.

Kate Lycett

There is nowhere quite like Yorkshire for that fast changing light that leaves you in the gloom one moment and in luminous, saturated colour the next. In the vastness of the landscape you can see the patches of light heading towards you across the hills, or the shadows coming ready to drain everywhere of colour. Kate couldn’t live anywhere where the sun shone all the time. The brilliance of those technicolour moments takes her breath away and is forever captured in her final painting.

Meet The Maker – Vanessa Conyers

Vanessa Conyers - Ceramicist

Vanessa Conyers – Ceramicist

Vanessa studied ceramics at Bath Spa University graduating in 2004 with first class honours and is now based in Dorset. She creates fine ceramics from earthenware paper clay that are printed, wrapped, constructed and then delicately hit until they begin to collapse.

Colour is applied and enamel decals are cut into the surface, and Vanessa is unable to call a piece finished unless it’s sparkling with mother of pearl and with gold, the traditional hallmarks of decadent luxury.

Bridal pieces

Inspiration comes from everywhere; design and fashion from many eras, music, colours, feelings and ideas are simmered down into objects that, individually, are explorations of surface design and decoration, but when seen as a series of collections become a form of self portraiture where Vanessa sees a growing essence of her soul and imagination being instilled piece by piece.

Vanessa regularly works on private commissions; her most recent major commission was a 100 piece art deco inspired dinner service. She also runs a pottery teaching studio in Dorset called ‘The Pottery Parlour’. Heart Gallery is proud to be bringing some of Vanessa’s decadent but cheeky collection to Hebden Bridge in the Spring of 2014.
